Kaiapoi Racing Cbbw.— This crew returned home on Saturday from the Wellington Regatta. Tbey will be feted with a dinner at the Pier Hotel on Wednesday evening next. Sudden Dbath.— A man named Thomas Logan, who bad for a considerable time past been of very intemperate habits, died suddenly at the houee of a farmer named Jackson on the Linooln road, on Saturday last. An inquest was held on bis body today, at tbe Hospital, the jury finding the cause of death to be " pulmonary apoplexy."

Smith's Combination.— The afterncon performances on Saturday were moderately attended, and there waa an improvement in numbers at the evening entertainment. To-night, the oompany will appear for the last time, at million prices. Immigbant Ships.— The ships Conflict and Jessie Osborne arrived in harbour on Saturday, tbe former with 340 and the latter with 280 immigrants on board. The Jessie Osborne has been plaoed in quarantine, as one oase of scarlatina is on board. The immigrants by the former may be engaged Tuesday next, Full reports appear in the shipping column.

Biondin.— -This renowned performer will arrive in Ohristohuroh about tbe middle of February, coming direct from Auckland. His exteneive pavilion will be erected in Latimer Square. Some idea of its sise will be gathered from the faot that a tender has been acoepted here for supplying Blondin with seventy-two poles, eaoh 66ft in length. Fibb in Lyttbwon.— On Saturday morning at 1.30 the fire bell was rung, awakening the inhabitants of the town in some alarm. Fortunately, owing to the exertions of the neighbours, the fire, whioh originated in a cottage occupied by Mr Page in Canterbury etreet, was put out without further damage than a hole being burnt through the roof of tbe lean-to. How it ooourred is unknown, but it is thought it may have arisen from a defeotivo flue.

Wimon's Palaob Cibous.— This large oonoern, from America, will visit Ohristchurch aud give a number of performance!. The company numbers thirty artists, and there is also a fine stud of trained horses. It is said that this oircus and hippodrome is on an exceedingly extensive scale, and that the pavilion will be the largest and moet comfortable for visitors that has ever been seen in tbis city. Tbe oompany will arrive by the Hawea on Saturday next.

Fatal Accident. — A farmer named Donald Stewart, who lived near the north line of railway a short distance from the Waimakariri railway bridge, was aooidently killed on Saturday night. A little before 12 o'olook he was driving homo in a spring trap with a man named Joseph Fantham, when bis horse turned, or in the dark, was unwittingly pulled off the road at a point where it is three or four feet above tbe ordinary level of the ground, and the trap at once oapsized. Fantham not being very muoh hurt oooeyed for assistance, and Mrs Stewart proceeded to the spot, when she found ber husband lying on the ground with one wheel of the trap on bis ohest. Deceased was released as quickly si poseible, but life was quite extinot. An inquest will be held on the body to day.

Indkpbndbnt Obdbb of Bbohabitbs. — Bro W. H. De La Mare, assistedby Bro E. A. Early, instituted a tent, in connection with the Albert Distriot 1.0. R., in the Wesleyan Sohoolroom, Lyttelton, on Friday evening (Bro De La Mare being especially commissioned by the Distriot Officers of theabove Distriot to aot as instituting officer to tbe new tent). The tent proceeded with the election of officers, as followe :— O.R., Bro W. Reed j D.R., Bro R. Hiokens i Secretary, Bro P. Howe $ Treasurer, Bro 8. Webb ; MS., Bro Forgartyi W.S., Bro Radeliffei Levite, 'Bro Laoe; Inside Guardian, Bro Anderson j Outside Guardian, Bro Thompson. Tbo OR. appointed as his supporters— Bros J. N. Tregear and Hilyard j and the D.R. appointed ac his supporters— Bros Derbridge and J. Robinson | and the Instituting Officer appointed Bro E. A. Early Past C.R. At the oonclueion of the election, Bro De La Man installed the offloors eleot, and plaoed them in tbeir several stations. There were nineteen present at the institution, and it is expected to make the number up to thirty next week. At the olose a unanimous vote of thanks was passed to Bro De La Mare for his serviojs in connection with the opening, and to Bro Early for the trouble he bad taken in getting the signatures to the application for a Disponestion to open the tent. Both the Brothers having responded, the Instituting Officer closed the tent in due form, and wished it $od speed.

BwBBSHNTAirvB Fisnre.— The second firing fpr the ohoice of representatives from the Kaiapoi Compeny No. 6 C.B.V. took plaoe at the range, Beach road, on Saturday a/Urnoon. Colonel Packe was pre*«nt, and the weather was fine, bnt a strong wind wa* blow, ing from, the northeast. Perrin, th* only competitor, made 78, but, as he required 91 to qualify, he is out of it.

Gymnastic Compbtitiok.— The competition by pnpil teacher* for Government pnV« for gymnaeUo exercise* took place at the Wesfe Chmtcburoh School Grounds, Lincoln road. The examination wa* conducted by Mr Walker, Government Drill Instructor, in the presence of Str A. O. Knight. Mtauter for Education; Mr J. P. Restell, Inspector of Schools ; Professor Bickerton •Mr J Cumberworth ; Mr F. 0. Hall, and a number of ladiee and gentlemen. Several very difficult exercises were very creditably performed, comprising Indian clubs, horizontal bar, parallel bars, and horizontal ladder. It i* to be hoped that a larger number of competitors from both Town and Country school* will come forward on the next occasion. The iuce«*«fßl competitors were— in Cla** 1., J. Fnuer with 84 point*, and L. Suckling witb 67 point*, botb from the Colombo road school ; in &a*e 11., E. Eugland with 81 points, from the same school.
