LYTTELTON POLLING.
The election of a Member to represent the Town of Lyttelton took {dace yesterday. At it excited ft great amount of interest rtrj litUe buainees wudotuduraetheday bytha tradetf oik. The Committee of Mr Webb felt •ore of a majority, whilst hit oppooitit't adherent* inn equally confident of soatees. That eaoh tide did their best vat raw evident, but the number who polled, eonsnsring the size of the roll, was small. Daring the difi good deal of chaff wai indulged in by the supporters of each candidate. Several parts were running round the Town, bnt they faded to bring op any voters. Shortly before Are o'clock a rush wat made to the Colonists' flail, which in a few minutes wai crowded. At 460 pjoa. the Bsxronve Omcsii (Dr Donald) announced the following at th« retolt of the election : — H.P.Horray-Aynaley... ... 139 H.B.Webb 107 Majority ... ... ... 8S And that he had to declare Mr Hugh Percy Murray- Ayntley duly elected* The result wat received with loud eheen. Mr H. P. Muiuut-Athblbt, on atcwiding the platform, wat recwred with pcolonged cheering. He tatd he had to thank the electors for the proud position they had placed him in. He had had a good fight, and had that time been victorious. He thanked all those who had voted for him and those who opposed him. He trusted that whan the excitement of the election was over they should go into quiet life, end forget anything that, during the beat of argument, might have been said, and he trusted tbey would in the future find him a useful Member. (Oheea). Mr H. B. Wbbb next addressed the meet* ing, and was received with Todferoot chairing and a voice j " Tour friendt bare told you." He said he stood before them that day, the first time in his life, a defeated eandMattv He had thought the result would have been different, and that what he had done fer the Town for many yean part would have led to a different result. Although be should have been happy to have given kit services to the lows,

The election had ifetppened at a very awkward time, being fixed in the midst of the Christmas festivities. (Cheers). Mr MtJEBAT-AxNfliißY moved and Mr ■ WBBB seconded a vote of thanks to the Returning Officer, whioh was carried with three times three. The proceedings then terminated.
