CHRISTCHURCH.
Tho election of throo members to the City ' Council in tho room of Mossrs E. B. Bishop, { W. Calvert, and M, B. Hart, whose term of office had expired, took plaoo yesterday, Mr Hart stood for ro-election; and the new candidates wero Messrs W. D. Wood, 0. W. Turner, H. Thomson, J, A. Bird, E. H. Banks, T. Hanoook, and J. Leo. Considerable interest was manifested in tho election, and the result was, that a greater number of ratepayers went to the poll than on any previous occasion. Tho poll dosed at 4 p.m., but from past experience, it was not expootod that the declaration would take place for a considerable timo affcorwards. About 6 p.m. a orowd assembled in front of tho City Council Chambors, and the number increased as time woro on. At twenty minutes past seven o'clock tho I Mayor oamo out and announced tho stato of the poll to be as follows : — W.D.Wood 630 C.W.Turner 622 H. Thomson 447 M.B.Hart ... 835 J. A, Bird 165 E. H. Banks 76 T.Hancock 67 J. Loo 10 Messrs Wood, Turner, and Thomson wero declared by tho Mayor to bo duly elected. All the candidates briefly addressed tho crowd from tho verandah, and tho proceedings terminated.
