The polling for the bye-election, caused 'by the resignation of the Hou. J. McfGowan, whom all will regret to leato has 'been incapacitated through indisposition, took place yesterday, and exoited considerable interest. Five gentlemen stood, Messrs Lucas (the selected Government candidate), Taylor, and Rhodes (Government supporters), Ha&eiden the selected ppposition candidate) and D'eeble (who stood as an Opposition! candidate at Thames. The poiViig was not heavy until the afternoon, when, tha officers at the various booths wens kept busy. The election was ooaduoted on friendly lines, and tha utmost order prevailed.

The arrangemtents made by Mr. W. Potts, the retitenanlg officer, were amiple, 'and the result was that the 1 re was no discomfort. Votes were recorded without amy difficulty, and ths results wefe anmounoed with aoaneinlable promijDtnese. At Thames Mr iTaylor geaured the 'best support; Mr iLueas also polled well generally, and Mir Rhodes had the bulk of the Coromaoidel vote,
