THE GENERAL ELECTION.

Tbe offloial declaration of the poll for Pareora electorate took place at the Courthouse, Temuka, at noon to-day. About 100 electors including ladies were present. Mr W. W. Stubbs declared the official numberto be Flatman 1594 Bhodes 1377 Majority 217 and deolared Mr F. W. Flatman duly elected. Mr Flatman thanked the electors for placing him at the head of tho poll. Ho was aware that bis position there wai not due solely to his own good qualities, but to the general popularity of the Government. He thanked his women frienda especially for the way in which they bad supported bim* He congratulated both parties upon tho manner in wbioh the eleotion had beeaoonduoted, and moved a vote of thanks to tbe Beturning Officer. Mr A. W. (___., in teconding the motion, apologised for the absence of Mr A. 29. G. tthodei. Do thanked the latter'a supporters for their energetic work throughout the campaign, and the victors for the courteous treat* ment accorded to Mr Rhodes and hiß friends. He, of course, regretted the result, but felt no shame at being beaten by eo creditable a foe, and only hoped the eleotion would be fought again between tbe same combatants. Tbe vote of thanks was carried, and Mr Mr Gaze called for three cheers for Mr Flat man which were given heartily. A similar compliment was paid to Mr Bhodes, Mr Flat man leading the way. At the close of Mr Flat man's address, he was the recipient of quite a bucketful of roaos pelted at him by his lady admirers. Mr J. M. Twoa_oy, for whom there were loud calls, said that he was in receipt of a telegram from the Hon. Mr B. Seddon, congratulating lhe ladies upon the victor; they had won for the Liberal cause, and he on behalf of that party thanked them for their services. In an interview Sir Bobert Stout said the reeuit of tbe election waa what be had predicted : — First, that the women's vote would be Democratic ; seoond, tbat women would not deolare against tbe secular education pystem ; third, that women would declare for the dir ct roto.
