THE GENERAL ELECTIONS.

BANGITATA. After the close of the poll in the Geraldine township (the principal polling place for the electorate) a scene of great lawlessness prevailed. Botten eggs were thrown about, the air for some timo being of a most offensive odour, and ilour ocattered in the vicinity ot the courthouse, which was the centro of attraction for the tinie being, a large crowd being assembled outeide waiting to hoar tho results of the poll from other places. Ab such a condition of things was expected, most of those present wore clothes they did not care much about, and consequently, when a pocket of flour wont through the air straight home, it was received genorally with the utmost good humour, with a few exceptions. On it becoming - known that Mr S. Buiton had a majority, ho was hoisted shoulder high and carried round the township amidst the cheers ot his friends. DUNEDIN, Sept. 27. Dr Fitchelt wrote to Sir Robert Stout this morning offering, by conßent of his supporters, to resign bis seat for Dunedin Central with a view to tho election of the Premier, but Sir Robert declined. A meeting was held in the afternoon to tako steps to induce Sir Robert to reconsider his decision not to reenter public life. A committee was appointed to get a petition signed asking him to consider his decision.
