Neglected Veterans.
I SU(iCiKSTKI) aiGMOItIAL. * At iho ■ annual mwlingf of tho Vc-lor- 1 ans' A^sor-iaiion, held in tho Town I Mall on Saturday afternoon, Captain Mace raisocl a pro-test against the remains of an old veteran, Scrg«aiit Peter Fahey, being allowed to remain in the old Catholic cemetery in Eliot Street, "a spot," he declared, in a disgusted tone, "where the boys run about playing leapfrog- and the horses wandered over, rubbing their backs on the mound.*' From * this, Captain 31 ace dwelt on another ' topic, ■which he said "was a sore point, with liim, viz., the neglect to erect a memorial to the brave old veterans who lost their lives while lighting 1 for their home arid country iv the war of tho sixties, while tho services of the volunteers leaving these shores to fight in South Africa were recogiused by the erection of. memorials in churchyards and conspicuous places in all parts of tho country. As these neglected veterans laid tlie foundation of this district and the , colony, the speaker considered there would be no difficulty in raising from £300 to £500 with which , to erect a substantial memorial, and he suggested the historical Marsland Hill as a suitable site. Captain Standish and Lieutenant Davies heartily approved the sug-g-estion and in the discussion that followed it was pointed out that the movement was too large and important a one to be confined to the Association, and the general public should take tlve matter in hand. It should be made a provincial movement. Finally a committee consisting- of Colonels Ellis and Messenger, Captains Stamlish, Mace and Paul. Lieut. Davies. Messrs W. I). "Wobstox*, and Crawford were appointed a committee to inquire into the matter an to raising funds, site, cost of memorial, f-tc, and report to a public meeting in about a month's time.
