LATE SUICIDE OF A MAORI CHIEF.
Hokitika,' October 23. An an inquest on the body of Tainui, the Maori chief at Arah'ura, -the jury found a verdict that deceased committed suicide while suffering from temporary insanity. Mr. Mackay,\the, late Commissioner, made an informal statement to the effect that deceased was under a misconception, thinking that the slight irregularity he had committed was a grave breach of criminal law. Feelings of disgrace seemed more than he could bear. Taiuui was formerly member for the Southern Maori district in the House of Representatives, and was much esteemed throughout the district.
