The nomination for the representation of the Grey and Bell district in the General Assembly will take place this day at noon. It was not our intention to comment upon the approaching Election but for the non receipt to the present time of the official reply to the Requisition addressed to Mr Dillon Bell by a large and influential portion of the constituency. From private sources, however, we learn that the Requisition, after some unexplained delay in its transmission to Auckland, had been forwarded on to the Bay of Islands whilst Mr Bell was on his return thither to Auckland, and we are informed by a late private letter (which is open to the inspection of the Electors) that Mr Bell gladly accepts the offer made to him, under the impression that Mr Hirst had ceased to be a candidate. And since Mr Hirst only offers himself, as will be seen by his published Address, in the event of Mr Bell not coming forward, the latter gentleman is the only candidate before the Electors. The fact is that each gentleman in his desire to avoid being the cause of a contested election has generously given way to the other. Mr Bell's long public and official career and his known interest in the affairs of Taranaki, satisfy us that if he be returned by the Electors he will not disappoint expectation, but that he will ably and faithfully represent the interests of the district, which at the present juncture would appear to be especially necessary, for if the published accounts of the proceedings of the House of Representatives are to be relied upon, the Electors greatly need one there of ability and courage — one who will neither deal lightly with our great grievance nor allow himself in calling attention to it to be silenced by a bold denial of facts ! The difficulties and dangers besetting the settlement from the lawless condition of the Natives are too serious for this description of trifling and need only a plain and earnest advocacy to ensure the attention of the House, and, let us hope, of His Excellency's Government.
