Dillon Bell, Esq., requesting him to become a candidate for the honor of representing you in the General Assembly*. In the event of his declining to accede to your wishes, I beg to announce myself as a candidate to represent your interests in the General Assembly. To my utter surprise I heard, for the first time, on Saturday last, that I was a Government nominee, pledged to support it and to vote at its bidding. T beg most distinctly and emphatically to declare that there is not the slightest grounds for such a report ; it is utterly repugnant to my principles as well as my feelings. I will not accept your suffrages upon any such terms as those imputed to me. I will not vote as this or any other ministry may dictate. In the main I approve of the general policy of the present Government. But there is one — and a very important exception — and that is its proceedings with respect to the Maori question in this Province. I have long been' of opinion that the Government ought to purchase land from those natives willing to sell ; to protect them in their right to do so, as also to enforce our right to buy ; that a commission be appointed consisting of a just proportion of Maories and those of our own people, to define the boundaries of such land offered for sale, and its decision to be final, and also that 'the Government enforce it if needs be. Had some such plan as this been acted upon four years ago, we should not now have to regret such a serious loss of life among the Maories and its attendant consequences to the quiet and prosperity of this Province. I also believe that at this moment we should have been in peaceable possession of large tracts of available land. My opinions on other questions connected with the best interests of this Piovince in particular, and that of the Colony in general, I shall be happy to explain personally on the day of nomination, when I hope to have the pleasure of meeting you.
