News 'has been received tliab ..Rifleman Darcv H. Slatter, second son of Mr and Mrs H. Slatter, of Tasman, and formerly of Orinoco, was killed m^action- in France on November 22ud. Ahe late soldier, who was 21 years of age, left New Zealand -with the Twentyseventh Reinforcements, and, so iar as is known, had only 'been a short time in France. Much sympathy is telt tor the parents of the deceased, who have ait elder son serving at the front, who I volunteered and ' left with the Main Body. ~ \Vith the advent of summer, there has been a decided revival in the number of visitors who are interested in the orchard lands of the district. Kecent purchasers of orchards in this district include Miss G. Gibson, of the Wellington Girls' College, and Mr Oachemailo, of the Straits {settlements, I both of whom have purchased improved properties with a view to making then- permanent homes in this district.
