NEW SOLDIERS' CLUB.

THE OPENING CEREMONY

A WELL-APPOINTED INSTITUTION.

(Australian and N.Z. Cable Association)

London, August 1

Sir Thomas Mackenzie opened Jhe New Zealand Soldiers' Club in Russell Square. There was a large gathering of Anglo-New Zealanders, including General Richardson, many officers on furlough, and wounded soldiers. The gathering inspected the buildings and were delighted. They are not extravagant, but home-like and comfortable. The quarters include sitting, dining, billiard, reception and bed rooms. New Zealanders are to be charged about one-third of cost price.

Sir Thomas1 Mackenzie explained that members of the. committee meet every train from France day and night, and welcome New Zealanders, and prevent the harpies and, sharpers who are always hanging about the metropolis from decoying the men, many of whom are strangers. to city life. The club would supply clean clothes and all necessities.

The Misses Mackenzie have equipped a similar hotel at Salisbury.

Sir James Carroll remarked t on the splendid enthusiasm of the New Zcalanders and the far-reaching influence of the Association. Other Dominion residents antl Home people would be glad to know that the War Contingent Association had provided for every contingency, ensuring the health and reasonable pleasures of the troops while in England.
