TO COMMEMOfiATE OMARUNUI
j A meeting cf veterans was held in j the Athenaeum, Napier (says the "Hav.ke's Bay Herald"), to "discus* means and ways of celebrating the bade of Qniarunui, which occurred on • October 12bh, 1380. The Mayor (Mr. J. V. Brown, M.P.) presided over an attendance of 30 enthusiastic veterans. Major Chicken said the meeting was a reunion of those who took part in the fight against the Hauhau Maoris at Omaxunui. For some time he had been moving with the object of con.n:einorating Omarunui on its GOth anniversary. Mr. Kinross White, who at present owned Omarunui, bad consented to grant a small area of k.;nd on which to oreci; an obelisk oh the spot whore the fight took place. ( A letter was rcccivecl from Mi-. Russell Duncii.1: pointing out 'ihat, the name w;\l< "Omarunui" and not "Omaranui." Mr. J. I>. Fif.'ldor suggested that the fight which r-ecunvd at Pctane at the same time as the Omarunui fight took place should bo also commemorated. After some discussion, it was decided to hold a picnic at Oniarunui on the1 anniversary day. and also to erect an obelisk on tho site of the n.
