Coming down the- hill, after ; passing the bushes, Mail Train began- to show signs of distress, inimediately he was called upon to ' sti'Uggle ' with ' " Grratitude arid Thale'stris ; ■"'(with whom the result appeared a match) and shortly afterwards Bwerving right across, -the; course to the- left, .narrowly escaped running amongst the crowd wh6were taking their view of the race! from. the ropes. In the dip (gratitude was leading by three-quarters of a length - from. Thalestris, who inch by inch gained upon Mr. EobLnson's marO; and after one o£- the' iribst; exciting finishes Thalestris got up in the last stride and won by a heacL ' Threetquarters ;.) of ; ajleiigth; separated the second and third.. Mail Train was fourth, Planet fifth,; .Mmer.rjsixth, Cathedral seventh, Battaglia eighth, Wandering Minstrel ninth, and Beatrix, and Dr. Syntax next.
