Kok Hing Day.

Following upon the observance last month of Confucius' Day, the Chinese resident in the island enjoyed another holiday this week, Tuesday last being known us Kok Hing Day. This festival—-the Chinese Empire Day —is, we understand, of recent origin, having been instituted to celebrate the anniversary of the creation, five years ago, of the Chinese Republic On former occasion* the day's rejoicings have terminated with weird concerts, and the performance of still weirder plays, but the latter feature on the present occasion has had to be eliminated, owing to the disorganisation arising from the exodus of numbers of the Chinese a few weeks ago. Ah it was, many of the boys working on the plantations, with their employers' consent, took Monday oil instead of Tuesday, thus affording themselves a two-day holid y. And no doubt in the main the coolies deserved it, for with proper treatment the Chinaman is an industrious and conscientious worker, ever ready to please and easily satisfied. It was Gladstone who once rtmarked that where the Chinaman wiis hated, it was usually on account of his virtues —not his vices.
