Auckland, to-day. It is understood thab Mr Evett has communicated with the Auckland Racing Club, deciirting fco hold the post of handicappcr on the amended terms submitted to him. Tixtaru, to-day. At a general meeting of the Timaru Racing Club last night it was resolved to amalgamate with the South Canterbury Jockey Club if tho latter will except five life mombers of the T.R.C. as members of the amalgamated clubs. Forty-six nominations have been received for tho Plunipton Park Coursing Meeting, Canterbury. Apropos of Atalanta, the dam of Ayrshire, who won tho Chesterfield Stakes at Nowmarket, " Pavo," in the Morning Post, says : — " Atalanta's early history is a remarkablo ono. Bred by Lord Roaslyn, at Easton, she was such a sickly foal that it was found necessary to bring her into the ring in a blanket. At the break-up of the partnership between his Lordship and Mr D. Cooper Lord Rosslyn purchased her for halfa-croivn, won £2000 in stakes with her, and eventually sold the mare for £1500 to the Duke of Portland. On July 7 C. Wood was at tho head of the list of winning jockeys with 78 successful rides, G. Barrett being second with 59. The Auckland Racing Club has drawn up their programmes for tho ensuing year. Tho total amount proposed to be given in stakes during the season is £7,230, apportioned as follows : — Spring meeting, £1,020 ; summer meeting, £3,84.0 ; autumn meeting, £1,670 ; winter meeting, £700. It was further resolved to reduce tho added money of the Cup to £750, the distance of the race still remaining at 2h miles. After a good deal of deliberation the clubdecided to place tho Derby on the fir3t day's programme of the summer meeting, the Cup race to to be run on the second day — New Year's Day. This step ha 3 provoked soma adverse comment. Besides tho Derby, the other principal raco on* tho first day of the summer meeting will be the A.R,C. Handicap, 1| mile. Speaking of rowing styles, the Melbourne Sportsman says :— " Ifc is quite amusing to look over tho files of the leading English papers and find that those who formerly swore by Hanlan now declare Beach to be the model whose style all novices should copy. The great differences betwoen tho styles of Hanlan and Beach is that the latter sits much higher in his boat, and does not seem to divide his strokes into two parts by finishing with a sharp jerk, as does the American. Still it must be borno in mind that tho stylo is subservient to the man, not the nan to tho stylo. One m«thod would not likely suit two men different in strength and build. It is ridiculous, therefore, to hear so-called authorities urging learners to copy each successive eh am pion . " "A BtroDg company has been formed in Autwerp to introduce Australian frozen meat into Belgium and has already received 10,000 sheep. It has ice chambers for 28,000. Tho meat is Belling from s£l to 7id. The German papers highly praise the frczea meat.
