LAKE COUNTY.

April 13 —During the past week the weath&r lias* been broken, but it is ogam fine, with sbght frosts at night. Week-end Trips.— Considering the counter attraction of the Exhibition at Christchurcn, the week-end trips this year have been fairly ■well patronised, althougn there was a falling off as compared with last year. The booking for the last jwo years were as follows: — 1906, Ul9; 3907, 692. The decrease for this year is, therefore, 427. The Monday excursions to Head of Lake show a. corespondang decrease, there being 115G m 1906 and 857 in 1907. The Mayor of Queenstown on Monday laet sent telegrams to the Acting Prime Minister, Hon. J. A. Millar, Mr W. Fraser, MJ2.8., and tne General Manager of Railways urging the continuance of the week-end trips for another month 01 so, ox, if poseable, throughout the winter. It was pointed out that beautiful weather prevailed here at this time of the year. There is no doubt that many who oannot make the trip in summer time would do so in winter if the concession asked for is granted. Accident.— On Monday evening last Mr F. Milnea, manager for Mr T. J. Milnes, storeikeeper, Queenstown, met with a p*mful accident. He was leadong a horse (yoked in a apring-cart) through a gateway, when the animal became somewhat fractious, and Air •Milnes was oaught between the vehicle and the sid"e of the gate, the result being a. dislocation cf the ieft shoulder. Dt Hastings attended the sufferer, whe is now prcgre&srng favourably.

Presentation. — Prior to leaving Queonstown for a trip home to Germany, Mr L. He-top •was met by a number of the membsrs of the congregation of St. Peter's Church, Queenstown, and presented with a handsome travelling case m recognition of 'his m.any years' faithful service as vestryman, churchwarden, *nd lay recder. The vicar (the Rev. R. T. Mathews) ciade the presentation, and in doing so referred! in eulogistic "terms to Mx Hotop's 40 yeara of service in the work of the Queenstown church. Mr W. Searle also made a few remarks, saying that he was sure Mr Hotop carried with him the best wishes at the congregation for a pleasant t<rip home and safe return. Mr Hotop feelingly replied, .thanking the members tor the handsome present.n t. Lake County Council. — A special cad ordinary lEies'xng of tbe couacol.- was bald on Tuesday last The special meeting dealt with the motor car by-iaw. Resolutions w-are passed prohibiting the use of motor cars on dangerous places previously mentioned by the council, and by-la-ws were paeeed effecting this purpose. A special meeting to confirm same w*a fixed for 2Sth May. At the ordinary meeting a general rate of six farthangs was struck. Two of tho councilors (Ore M'Kibbin »nd M'Bride) favoured & five-farthing rate, •which, they considered, was sufficient with strict economy. Lower Shoiover Bridge.— At the Lake County Council meeting the following resolution was passed: — "That a special meeting of the canned be held on 2bth May next. The business to be brought before it will be the passing of a special resolution to raise, by way of loan, under 'Tbe Local Bodies' lioana Act, 1901, *The Counties Act, 188 C,' The Public Works Act, 1905,' and tiie several amendments to the said acts, or under any other acts, provisions, or authority -enabling the council on this behalf, a sum of £4000, to be applied exclusively towards the construction of a bridge across the Lower Shoiover."

Municipal jSiectione. — There dees not seean to be a great deal of interest shown in the forthcoming municipal elections. I understand that Mr H. M'Kibbon, who has ably filled the mayoral chaar at Arrowtown for the past two yeare, intends to «gain offer his services.

Football — A match w-as played at Arrowtown on Wednesday last between teams from the Reniarkables ' Cub (Queenstown) and Arrow Club. After a fact and interesting game the Renxtxkables won by 9 points to 3. Mr J. C. M'Bude acted as referee.

The Governor's Tour. — According to latest information, the Governor will arrive in Queenstown on Monday, '22nd inst., ficm Pembroke. He makes a stay of about an hour in Arrcwtown on that day.

Personal. — Amongst the visitors to the district last week was Mrs Jam^s Marsden, of Nelson, eldest daughter of the kite Mr W. G. Hees, the pioneer of the Wakatipu. During Mrs Marsden's stay in Queenstown she visited many of the scenes of her childhood. New Post Office Residence. — Mr J. Drummey, the contractor for the post office residence at Arrowtown, 13 making good' progress with the work, and should be finished :n about two or three weeks. The building is a very substantial one, and will greatly improve ih3 app2arance of that part of the ■town.
