i December 8s — In the earlier" part, of the week very grateful rain fell — a fall that was worth* some hundreds of pounds to the district. On Thursday the weather cleared, giving a splendid day on Friday, an all important day, since it was the fixture of the annual Lake County -A. and P. Show. Licensing. — The quarterly meeting of the Wakatipu Licensing Committee was he.d at Queenstown on Tuesday last, the business was of an ordinary character — that is to say, there were no reports nor expressions ot opinion indicative- of any laxity in the observance of the licensing laws. There were "present on committee: — Messrs F. J. Burgess, S.M. (chairman), G. Johnson, A. Ford, and Dr Douglas. The following applications for permanent transfers were granted : — P. Ford, jun., to Denis Corcoran, rloyal Hotel, Waikaka; Mrs Selwood, to Wm. Yoang, Lake W*k*tipu. Hotel, Kingston; Chas. Hopgood, ±o F. 'Wbodhouße, Nevis H«tel, -Nevis;. Personal. — Mr George Lynch, for a number of years the popular and efficient coach driver on the Queenstown to Pembroke run, has accepted an offer from the Tourist Department to take charge of one of the accommodation houses on the Xc Anau to Milford Sounds track. Mr and Mrs Lynch left this week to take up their new duties. The department is fortunate in securing the services of this courteous and obliging young couple, who carry with them from this district the kind wishes of many friends. Valedictory. — Quite a number of Queenstewn people have left here recently. Mr C. H. Robertson, who left a few -weeka ago, returned for a d*y or two, when occasion was taken by the Foresters to present him with a- silver pen and pencil. The District Secretary -(Mr MTieJ" made the presentation at the. Queenstown Foresters' Lodge, of which Mr Robertson was P.C.E. Another who leaves Queenstown is Mr D. Goodger, who for eight years has been in ' the telegraph office here, relieving when occasion required in Arrflwtown as well. During their residence in Queenstown Mr and Mrs Goodger have become deservedly ' popular, in fact there probably are none here so well liked a* fhey. On Friday evening at M'Bride's Hotel a few friends- met, and, through the Mayor (Mr Gavin), a purse -of sovereigns was presented to the guests of the evening. His Worship, in a happy speech, referred to Mr Goodger's courtesy, efficiency, and obliging manners, and to the many genuine but unobtrusive kindnesses of Mrs Gocdger. Others present spoke in high terms of the guests, and Mr Goodger in welL chosen remarks returned thanks. " For he's a jolly good fellow " was of course song. Mr Goodger's new sphere of duty is Owaka, where he takes the position of postmaster. Hospitals.— Last Monday the delegates from the local authorities elected the fo.lowing trustees to the Wakatipu District Hospital Board: — Messrs W. Seark, J. Bevin, R H. Turton, C. C. Ware, L. Hotop, and F. St. Omer. To the Arrow District Hospital Trust the following were elected by local authorities: — Messrs G. D. Boird. J. Allan, P. Berbel, J. K. Paton, W. M'Kibbin, and Henry M'Kibbin. Acquisition. — A yearling draught colt bought by Mr F. M'Bride in Christchurch should in time be an acquision, to this district. He ia a high priced yearling by the imported stallion Granton, out of a Wallace (imp) mare. Queenstown Band. — The consistent tuition -by bandmaster Fraser of the younger players in this organisation iajttow becoming apparent, and the band seems' qnite a, different body front what it was last season. It will again play during the summer months under engagement by the Tourist Department, giving out-of-door performances two evenings in the week, for which payment is given as heretofore. Lake- County A. and P. Show. — This show, held, on Friday at Mr Paterson's, Ayrburn Station, Arvowtown, was an unqualified suceegs. Fine weather prevailed — a hot clear day, tempered Jby a grateful breeze. The attendance, was large, and the number of exhibits in every class was good. The ground during the day presented quite an animated scene. A vast improvement in dispatching events, judging exhibits, &c, was noticeable, for which the stewards and the secretary (the judges too, of course) are lo be complimented. The stock shown was of very high quality, particularly the sheep. In horses, both heavy and light, some very good animals were shown — perhaps more particularly was this so among the draughts. In gigs, traps, &c, some very good specimens were on the ground from Murphy & Co., and J. F. Reid, two Arrowtown firms. The poultry exhibits were numerous and good. In the industrial and sundries classes there was keen competition, the exhibits being of very high order- Altogether this year's show may be reckoned as a, complete success ■ anof qnite- an education. I Racing. — Very liberal nominations have i been received by the L«.ke County Jockey Club races, next Friday and Saturday. Omitting the nam-es, which appeared in the daily and the local papers, there are: — 11 for the Jockey Club Handicap, 12 for the Flying, 8 for the Lake County Cup, 13 for the Shorts Handicap, 8 for the Queenstown Trot, 9 for the.Shotover Trot. Theie promises to be some good racing.
