THE ECLIPSE STAKES.

This year's Eclipse Stakes, of 10,000sovs, which attracted an entry of 'dOti, but ot which only six taced the starter, was fraught ■with a good deal of interest, as Val dOr, who.it is generally considered, is not such a good coit as Jardey, whom Cicero defeated in the Derby, was sent across the Channel to -take on the Derby winner at a'concession of 51b over a, 10-furlong course. The other Starters were Llangibby (Wildfowler—Concussion), Polymeius (Uyllene — Maid Marion), Challenger (isinglass — Meddlesome), and Henry the First (Melton- -Sirnona-). Cicero was sent; out on odds on chance at 13 to 8, and Val dOr ruled at 3's to 1. Nines were obtainable about Llangibby, and 25's to 50's the others. The lot was despatched to an excellent start, the first into his stride being Bolymolus, on the left, who led just •cleaT of 'Uicero, Val d'Qr, and' Ltangibby, with" ChaHenger settling down last to the' mile po"3t, w.here Henry the First took '■fourth, -place, Elangibby lying next. So 'ihey ran to the bend, for home, when Polymelus held a, slight lead of Cicero,. Henry tho First, Val d'Or. and Llang-ibby; but when 'fairly in the iinc for homo Cicero took up the running, in the centre, from 'Polymelus (on the rails), Val dOr (on "the outside), and Henry the First. Kear-, •lag the distance Polymelus dropped back beaten, and Val dOr drew alongside •Cicero, the issue being confined to the pair, who were clear of Llangibby and Tolymelus. The two leaders raced home side by side amidst the greatest excite- ■ raent, and Mether had his whip up at the distance, where the Frenchman slowly but surely took his measure and gradually forging; ahead stride by stride won amidst a storm ol cheers by half a length; threepavts of a length between the second and third. The winner is a son of Flying Fox and Wandora, a grand-daughter of See Saw, the sire of lhe defunct Rubezahl, and grandsire of old Goldspur. He won ■4-lOOsovs as a two-year-old, and was unbeaten in the four races in which he started at that age- This year he won tho -French Two Thousand Guineas, but subsequentlj r lost form through catching the epidemic which "broke out in M. 'Blanc's stable. Val dOr is amongst those engaged 'in the St. Leger, which is to be decided on the 13th inst.. and looks like -having an excellent chance of carrying the Doneaster classic from the shores of "Perfidious Albion."
