RACING IN ENGLAND.

The following particulars of this year's Derby are taken from the London Sportsman. The lace was run in a heavy thunderstorm, and resulted as follows: — ' THE DERBY STAKES, of 6500sovs, by subscription of 50sovs each, h ft, or 5 on y it declared by the last Tuesday m March, 1903 ; colts 9bt, fillies Bst 9lb , the nominator of the winner received 500sovs, the second at least 400sovs, and the third at leas 200sovs. About one mile and a-half. The first to leave the paddock in a downpour of rain was Andovor, who was followed in the parade by St. Amant (wearing b'inkers), St. Denis, Lancashire (wearing a hood), Henry the First, Gouvernant, and John o' Gaunt, the whipper-in being Coxswain. They turnpd and cantered in similar order, and the white flag was hoisted ft five mimi'es past 3, a failstart being effected three minutes later. St. Amant, on the outside, was the quickest away, with Coxswain, Lancashire, John o' Gaunt, Andover, and Henry the First next, and Gouvernant last, behind St. Dems, and on settling down St. Amant went on with a two-length lead of Henry the First, Lancashire, and Coxsw£«ln. with John o' Gaunt next a-nd St. Denis whijjping m. Passing the mile post three lengths of daylight separated St. Amant from Andover, whose nearest attendants were Gouvernant, Coxswain, find John o' Gauat, St. Denis sill being last behind Henry ths First, and no further change took place till a quarter of a mile from home, where John o' Gaunt took second place some three lengths behind St. Amant, and a long way clear of Sr. Dems and Andover. But the victory of Mr Rothcchild's colt was assured, John o' Gaunt failing to gain an inch ur>on him in the run in, and it was by three lengths and amidst deafening cheers that St. Amant triumphed over John o' Gaunt, after making every yaid of the mnning; six lengths separtti +he second and third.
