RACING IN ENGLAND

Lt was more a procession for first and second money than a race, the odds of 100 to 8 hud on the former very fairly indicating the relative merits of the pair. The next meetingwas the Newmarket Second July. On the first day a good field of 17 came ottt for the 'July Handicap, which Sloan, on Leisure Hour, just won by a neck from the outsider, [Perthshire, ridden by Sam Loates. Perthshire would have won at five furlongs and a-half, but jvas laught in the last 50yds. The principal event on the card on the second day was the Chesterfield Stakes, which fell to IMr H. i r . King!s Chicane, the favourite, Lord 'Melton, running unplaced. Sloan was on the winner, who started at 4- to 1, but this was ■Sloan's only success during the day. Chicane *s by Juggler (son of Touchet) out of Chevrette, by Chevron — Ranee, by Knight of the Crescent. The next rendezvous was at Sandown Park, where all sporting England ,went to see Diamond Jubilee win his Eclipse Intakes. And he did win, in good style, but It was no erift to him, as he got home by only

half a length, and had to cut the recorel for the course. On the second day the National Breeders' Produce Stakes brought out a field of 15 runners, and resulted in a dead heat betwesn the top weight, Star Shoot, and lan, a dark colt belonging to Sir R. Waldie Griffith. The former was the mount ot Lester .Reiff, while lan was ridden by Sloan, who had only four mounts in the course of the afternoon, and won on each occasion. Lan, who was making his first appearance on a racecourse, was bred by his owner, Sir R. Wnldis Griffith, in 1898. He is an own brother to St. la, and the last foal of his dam, Bereugaria, who died in the following year. Star Shoot was bred in 1898 by Captain Eustace Lodgci, who has leased the colt to Lord William Bercsford for his racing career. Star Shoot made his fiist appearance on a racecourse at Manchester in the Summer Breeders' Foal Plate, in which he ran Princess Melton to a length. His next outing was in the New Stakes at Ascot, for which he started favourite, and in which he ran third to the Limosa colt and Orchid. His next race was at Sandown Park, where he won the British Dominion Two-year-old Race from the Vitula iilly, following up this success a week later by winning the Hurst Pai'k Foal Plate from Ark Royal, Gla3alt, and six others. His next appearance under colours was in the National Breeders' Produce Stakes.
