When Mr Coventry dropped his flag, Sir Hugo was the first to begin from Llanthony, Persistive, and Galeopsis, of whom Persistive quickly drew to the front. Approaching the mile post Thessalian assumed the command, and with St. Damien driven into second place, the pair went on clear of Persistive', La Fleche, and Sir Hugo, while Bucentaure had quitted the rear rank and separated them from Bonavista and El Diablo. As they quitted the furzes, Bucentaure worked himself to the head of affairs, and was leading at the top of the hill from Thessalian, Sir Hugo, St. Damien, and La Fleche. Iv descending the hill 'lhessalian gave way to Sir Hugo, Galeopsis, and La Fleche. In crossing the road Galeopsis compounded, and Sir Hugo having soon afterwards challenged Bucentaure, they went on side by side from La Fleche in the centre, and Thessalian on the lower ground, St. Angelo drawing up next on the top side from St. Damien. Below the distance Sir Hugo shook off Bucentaure, who a few strides further on was headed by La Fleche, with St. Angelo creeping into fourth place from Thessalian and St. Damien. For the remainder of the journey there was no change, as although La Fleche hunted Sir Hugo home, she never looked like quite reaching him, and, after an exciting race, suffered defeat by three parts of a length; a length between second and third. St. Angelo was close up fourth, clear of Thessalian fifth, St. Damien sixth, Llanthouy seventh, Hatfield eighth, Rueil ninth, Persistive tenth, and Bonavista eleventh, the last of all being El Diablo. After one slight break away, Broad Corrie, on the inside, jumped off in front of La Fleche, Lady Hermit, and Palisandre, with Arise next, and The Smew hist. So they proceeded at a steady pace to the mile post, where Broad Corrie was just clear of La Fleche, Lady Hermit, and Palisandre still going third and fourth, with the others clustered together and whipped in by Shining Star to the top of the hill, when Arise dropped well astern. At the same time La Fleche closed with Broad Corrie, and they came on side by side from Lady Hermit and Palisandre until half way down, when Broad Corrie got away again half a length and The Smew swept into third berth from Lady Hermit and Palisandre. No sooner had they entered the straight than La Fleche deprived Broad Corrie of the command, and The Smew separated them from Lady Hermit and the woll-beaten Broad Corrie until a-quarter of a mile from home. Here Broad Corrie had reached the end of her tether and gave way in quick succession to The Smew and Lady Hermit, of whom the latter was unable to make much of a bid, and from the distance left the issue to La Fleclie and The Smew. The set-to between the pair was of a very close character, and although until 50yds from home La Fleche promised to get home with just a little to spare, she then changed her legs, and amid a scene of great excitement The Smew almost got level, the verdict being only a short head.
