Scarcely had the field got under weigh than St. Angelo took up the running from Galeopsis and Scarborough on the same side, with The Lover and Bonavista respectively heading the right hand and middle lot. Next to these lay Dunure, King Charles, Goldfinch, and El Diablo, Per6istivej and Curio in a cluster, with Rouge Dragon, who ran wide by himself, and President jointly bringing up the rear. At the end of the first half mile Dunure and Scarborough began to lose their places, and on passing the T.Y.C. winning post Persistive was also in trouble, together with King Charles. In the meanwhile St. Angelo continued at the head of affairs from Galeopsis, and when The Lover dropped back at the Bushes, Bonavista went on third from Sir Hugo, Goldfinch, El Diablo, and Curio, the others being completely disposed of. As they commenced the descent, both Sir Hugo and Goldfinch hoisted signals of distress, and before entering the Abingdon Mile they bad

given way to Curio, who wu<s now hanging on the skirts- -of the three leaders-. -With St. Angelo gradually tiring he could do no more than shake off Galeopsis, and when challenged by Bonavista he was almost spun out. The upshot was that he had lost the lead nearly a couple of hundred yards from home, and with Bonavista going steadily away he won by a length and a-half. In turn, St. Angelo secured second money by half a length, with Galeopsis close up fourth ; Goldfinch (who pulled up lame), a long way off, fifth. Sir Hugo sixth, The Lover seventh, El Diablo eight, Scarborough ninth, and Rouge Dragon, the last four being whipped in by King Charles and Dunure. Value of the stakes, L 4400. Time, lmin 54sec.

La Fleche and Adoration cantered in front for 300yds,after which the pair reversed places, and were followed by The Smew, the next two being Gantlet and Lady Hermit, with Shining Star in the rear. They proceeded in this order to the Bushes, where the issue -was reduced to the three placed by the dropping away of Gantlet, Lady Hermit, and the- Orphan Agnes filly, and La Fleche having joined Adoration, the pair commenced the descent of the hill nearly clear of The Smew. Although so far Adoration, owing to the moderate pace, had not been quite stretched out, the next 200 yds made all the difference, and in 'the Abingdon Mile Bottom Chaloner was hard at work. In the meanwhile La Fleche was breasting the hill in her old style, and she drew but a very easy winner by a length from The Smew, who passed Adoration and secured second money by three parts of a length. Gantlet was a bad fourth, Lady Hermit fifth, the Orphan Agnes filly sixth, and Shining Star tailed off f Time, lmin 52 2-ssec. Value of the stakes, L 3650.
