Peninsula Mining.
(Feom Oub Own Cobrespondent.)
Beoad Bay, September 10
Messrs Eeid and party, who, with commendable pluck, took up the abandoned workings at the base of the Harbour Cone. Hooper's Inlet, some aix monthß ago, have been busy at work all winter. A good deal of new machinery, some of it specially designed by Mr E. Reid, one of the party, who is no amateur at the business, has been erected and alreadj tried. The stone is as easily obtained as from an ordinaEy quarry, but the chief difficulty seems to be in saving the small quantity of gold therein o -ing to the presence of other minerals. This they hope to have now overcome, as they have the minor difficulty of a short supply of water by building a Btnall dam.
About 20 tons of known poor stuff was recently put through as a etart, and about 15 tons of what is considered the best stone is notv ready and will be operated on in a few days. The men have a real interest in the undertaking, one of them being owner of the land, and they are determined to settle the question, for themselves at least, as to whether the stone is payable or not. A few days ago two gentlemen were prospecting Hooper's Inlet beach, and it is said they bave pegged off an extended claim on the Sandymount side of the inlet.
