Sir F Johnstone's eh c Friar's Balsam, by Hermit —Flower of Dorset, 9st 31b (mo. 71b pen.) ... 1 Lord Londonderry's oh c Hazlebatch', by Hermit „ — Hazledean, Bst lOJb .... ... ... 2 Lord Calthorpe's eh f Seabreeze, by Isonomy— St Marguerite, Bst 111b (inc. 41b pen.) ... -i Friar's Balsam was bred by Lord Alington, who is joint owner of him, and made his first appearance in the New Stakes at Ascot, which he won in a canter from Seabreeze, Ayrshire, and four others, his next appearance being in the Huretbourne Stakes at Stockbridge, when he defeated Balderdash, Harpagon, and two others. He was successful in the, July Stakes at the Newmarket July Meeting, Seabreeze and Chillington being his nearest attendants, and next appeared in the Richmond Stakes, at Goodwood, which he also carried off with ease, though carrying a penalty of 101b. At the last-named meeting he was allowed a walkover for the Molecombe Stakes. Ho is engaged in the Dewhurst Plate, to be run next week, while for next season he has the following important engagements ;— -Two Thousand Guineas, Epsom Derby and Grand Prize, Doncaster St. Leger, Kempton Park Royal Stakes of 10,000sovs, Lancashire j Plate of ll,ooosovs, at Manchester, Grand Prize of Paris, Champion Stakes at Newmarket, Prince of Wales' Stakes, St. James' Palace Stakes, and Hardwicke Stakes, at Ascot, Kempton Park Grand Prize, His name also appears in 1889 among the entries for the Eclipse Stakes. Hazlebatch ran for the first time in the Champion Foal Stakes, of lOOOsovs, at Derby last month, and won easily in a field of 12. He was purchased by Lord Londonderry as a yearling for 1750g5, that price being forthcoming no doubt on the strength of his being halfbrother to Kermesse, who was the crack two-year-old filly of 1881. In that year she was only once beaten, carrying off in succession the Epsom Stanley Stakes, of 492sovs ; Ascot New Stakes, of 1268sovs ; Newmarket July Stakes, of 1580sovs ; Doncaster Champagne Stakes, of 960sovs;and Middle Park Plate, of 2817sovs. She was beaten by a head by Dutch Oven when giving the latter 41b, but had her revenge by beating Lord Falmouth's filly in the Champagne Stakes as well as in the July Stakes. Hazlebatch is engaged in all the big events of next season. Seabreeze won this season the Biennial Stakes at Ascot, but has been twice before beaten by Friar's Balsam— in the New Stakes and July Stakes, while at Derby 3he could only get home third in the Harrington Stakes, of lOOOsovs. PEDIGREE OF THE WINNER.
