At the initial attempt the flag fell to a good start. The first to show m advance was Polyeucte, who was pursued by Miss Jummy and Sauterel'e, succeeding these being Upas and St. Honore, with Minting going easily close up, and" GamiD last. They had covered but a very short distance when Polyeucte quickened the pace, and held a twenty lengths lead of Miss Jnmmy and Sauterelle. while next to these came Upas, St. Honore, and Minting, with Gamin still whipping m. After seven furlongs had been traversed Minting was pulled back last, Polyeucte still retaining the lead, with Miss Jummy and Sauterelle close up, Upas and St. Honore next, with Minting and Gamin m the rear. They ran with but little variation until they were about a quarter of a mile from home, when the heavy going caused Miss Jummy to show signals of distress, while Minting, who had been gradually lessening the distance between himself and Polyeucte, came out full of running inside the distance and won without the semblance of an effort, amidst the enthusiastic plaudits of the English, by two lengths; a similar distance separated second and third, whilst three lengths off Upas was placed fourth ; then at an interval came Sautorellfi fifth, Gamin sixth, St. Honore next, with Miss Jummy, whom Watts pulled up when she was beaten, last.
