Ormonde, who is trained by J. Porter, at Kingsclere, was bred by his owner, the Duke of Westminster. He did not make his appearance upon a racecourse last year until the Newmarket Second October meeting, when he secured a post sweepstakes of 500sovs, beating Modwenna and Warbler. He won the Criterion Stakes of 906sovs at the Houghton meeting in a canter from Oberon, Mephisto, and three others, and supplemented this victory by winning the Dewhurst Plate of 1602sovs, beating Whitefriar, Murdoch, Miss Jummy, Gay Hermit, and six others. His liabilities include the Derby, Doncaster St. Leger, Newmarket Biennial Stakes at the Craven meeting, Prince of Wales' Stakes, Ascot Derby, St. Jamtss' Palace Stakes, Rous Memorial Stakes, and Hardwicke Stakes at Ascot ; Gratwicke Stakes, and Sussex Stakes at Goodwood ; Kempton Park Grand Prize ; Doncaster Stakes ; Great Foal Stakes and St. Leger Stakes at Newmarket First October ; and the Champion Stakes and Newmarket Derby at the Second October meeting. Ormonde comes of a rare racing family, his sire, Bend Or, having won the Derby of 1880 ; his'grand-sire, Doncaster, the Derby of 1873 ; his great-grand-sire, Stockwell, the St. Leger of 1852 ; and his great-great- grand-sire, The Baron, the St. Leger of 1845. His dam, Lily Agnes, is also extremely well bred, she being a daughter of Macaroni and Polly Agnes. Ormonde was first favourite six weeks ago for the Derby at 5 to 1, and after this victory he must have come to a very short price for the leading classic

event to be run on the 26th of the present month. Minting was also unbeaten last season, and his perfornmrces were of a very high order. At Newcastle he wou the Seaton Dolaval Stakes of 47050v6, beating seven others ; at Goodwood won the Prince of Waleb Stakes of 2800sovb, giving weight to six others; at Doncaster won the Champagne Stakes of 980sovs, beating five others ; at Newmarket First October won the Triennial Produce Stokes of 531sovs, from two others ; and at the Second October meeting won the Middle Park Plate of 261550vs (9st 31b), beating Braw Lass (Bst 81b), Saraband (9st 31b), and six others. Minting is engaged in the Derby, Grand Prix de Paris, St. Leger, and other valuable stakes. His bire, Lord Lyon. son of Sfcockwell, won the Two Thousand Guineas, Derby, and St. Leger of 1866. Mephisto last year walked over for the Bibury Foal Stakes of 300sovs ; was beaten by Keudal in a Post Sweepstakes of 700sovsat Stockbridge, carrying 9st each ; rau second to the same horse at the same weights in the July Stakes of 1780sovs at Newmarket, seven others running ; wou the Boscawen Stakes of 600sovs at Newmarket First October, beating three others; won the Zetland Stakes of 350sovs, beating two others ; ran third to Ormonde and Oberou in the Criterion Stakes ; and second to Loved One in the Foal Post Stakes of 400sovs. Mepbisto's sire, Robert the Devil, won the St. Leger of 1880. The colt is not engaged in the Derby, but is in the Epsom Grand Prize, Grand Prix de Paris, and St. Leger.
