Cosmos cantered in front of Eole, Hermitage, and St. Gatien to the stand, when Eole drew half a length in front. As they rounded the Hotel turn Cosmos rejoined him, and they pottered along, followed at clear intervals by Hermitage and St. Gatien until entering the Old Course, whon Eole forged ahead. Equal gaps then divided them until entering the straight, when Hermitage, who had been pulling tremen^ dously hard, took second place, and deprived Bole of the command a quarter of a mile from home. At the same time St. Gatien drew up to his quarters, and soon afterwards going to the front won by six lengths ; a bad third. Time, 6 mm. 5 sec. Crafton jumped away with the lead from Sheraton, Lucerne, and Willie Darling, and the rear was brought up by Queen Adelaide for a couple of hundred yards, when Sheraton carried his colours to the fore. He went into the Swinley Bottom clear of Crafton, Bendigo, and Willie Darling, of whom the favourite took second place before entering the Old Course. The others then ran without change to the Brick-kilns, when Wild Thyme, on the inside, passed Willie Darling, and aE the same time Crafton shot up to the leading pair on the inside. This enabled him to enter the straight at the head of ' affairs, pursued by Bendigo and Sheraton, with Lucerne drawing up on the outside of the last-named t and Willie Darling remaining in his heels. A couple of distances from home Bendigo closed with Orafton, and soon taking all the pull out of him, he sailed along in gallant fashion and won by four lengths from Willie Darling, who caught Orafton on the post and beat him by a head far second place.
