others being headed after crossing the road by Protectionist. A quarter of a mile from home Gay Hermit went to the front, pulling double, and although Protectionist and Braw Lass tried hard to get him into trouble, they failed to do so, and ho won in tho commonest of canters byhalf a length ; a length between second and third. Alaric-was fourth, Little Lady fitth, and Evergreen last. Considerable delay occurred before the flag fell, several breaks away, in which Sheraton and •Xaintrailles were the principal offenders, occurring before they were despatched t> a splendid start. Royal Hampton, on tho outside, was quickest away, and made the running, closely attended by Sheraton and Crafton, tho three being clear of Xaintrailles and Kingwood. Then came Paradox and Luminary heading the others, who were whipped in by Melton, Choubra, and the Lynette colt. When they had settled down Luminary soon began to improve his position, and at the mile-post took third place to Royal Hampton and Sheraton, Crafton now occupying fourth position, closely followed by Xaintrailles, Esterling, Paradox, and Red Ruin, with Melton coming next at the head of the rear division, of whom the Lynette colt and Choubra woro still the last. With very little change in these positions they streamed through the furzes to the hill top. Here Sheraton and Red Ruin joined Royal Hampton, heading him as they commenced the descent, and the three came on with a slight lead of Lumiuary, Xaintrailles, aud Crafton ; then at a clear interval were Paradox and Melton, while Choubra and the Lynette colt here began to tail off. Half-way down the ' hill Red Ruin took up the running, with Sheraton, Luminary, and Xaintrailles as his immediate attendants, of whom, as they rounded Tattenham Corner, both Luminary and' Sheraton were in trouble, and Red Ruin came into the straight with a slight lead of Xaintrailles, Royal Hampton, Paradox, and Melton. Directly after crossing the road Red Ruin had shot his I bolt, leaving Xaintrailles in front of Royal ! Hampton and Paradox, while Melton now took | a moife prominent place on the outside. The French colt, however, only held his advantage j for a few strides, as half-way up the straight Paradox came out with a clear lead of -Royal Hampton and Melton, and to those three the issue was now confined. The first to give way was Royal Hampton, who retired two distances from home, and Melton, gradually overhauling Paradox, drew up to his neck a hundred yards from the chair, and after a desperate finish, of which he got the best, in the last stride, Melton won by a head on the post. Royal Hampton finished a bad third, four lengths in front of Xaintrailles, fourth. Then came Crafton fifth, Sheraton sixth, Red Ruin seventh, Luminary eighth, Kingwood ninth, Lynetto colt tenth, and Choubra last. Time, 2 mm. 43 2-5 sec. Value of the stakes, £4975. The flag fell at the first attempt, and Barnacles made play from Bird of Freedom, Pepper and Salt, and Sheraton to the mile-post, whero Cornstalk drew into second place, Bird of Free-dom-and Lord Charles going on third and fourth, and Sheraton dropping back labt. At. the top of the hill a widish -gap separated Barnacles from Cornstalk, with Bird of Freedom, Lord Charles, aud Pepper and Salt at the heels of the North Country candidate, while Sheraton was losing ground at almost every stride. Before rounding Tattenham Corner Cornstalk was beaten, and Bird of Freedom and Lord Charles then followed ■ Barnacles until half-way up the straight, when Pepper and Salt improved his position by changing places with Lord Charles. Although the favourite had been running lazily with Archer up to this pointy he was no sooner set going than he put the verdict beyond the shadow of doubt, and won in a canter by a length from Pepper and Salt ( who passed Barnacles opposite the stand, and beat him half as far again for second money. Lord Charles was a bad fourth, and Sheraton last. Time, 2 mm. 10 3-5 sec. Value of the stakes, £4002.
