After a delay of nearly 20 minutes the flag fell to a fair start, in which Feuillago, Matrimony, and Hygiene were the firat to show in front. They were closely followed by Arga, Lockstitch, Siam, and Exmoor,<and then came Tho Bard, at whose quarters lay Lorgnette for half the journey. At this stage Lockstitch lost his place, and Arga was th-n disputing the load with Fauillage, Hygiene, and Exmoor until a coupla of distances from homo, when The Lard assumed the command, and in croasing over to the centre quickly shut out three or four of tha tiring division. At the commencement of the Btaud he had drawn clear of Hygiene, and, adding to his lead as he wont on, he won easily by 10 lengths from Hygiene, who saved 89cond money by a neck. With tbe Miss Mannering colt running in at tha finish, he was beaten the same distance from Lorgnette. Timo, 1 mm. 7 2 sth sec, THE BATTIIYANY STAKES. Hermitage caught hold of < the ground the quickest, and immediately drew out with a clear lead of Bird of Freedom, Mespilus, and Corunna. These settled down three or four lengths in front of Sweetbread, MacM&lxun, Sc. Blaise, Macheath, and Blue Grass, on the right, with Baudigo in their track for a quarter of a mile, when MacMahon was interfered with by ono of tho mounted huntsmen, and lout his place. Toastmaster, who bagan fairly well in tho centre, quickly disappeared into the ruck, and with Eastern Emperor in advance of Wood lark- and Magdalen on tho left, they were alone prominent, through having berths so wide of the main body, all ot whom avoided the new ground as much aa possible. Adding to hia command, Hermitage made a gap of five or six lengths from Bird of Freedom, Mespilus, and Corunna, in the first half of the journey, and by so doing he stopped very rapidly after leaving tho new ground. Thus Bird of Freedom waa enabled to take up the running three furlongß from home, and the pair came on from Mespilus and Ooruniia to the junction wifch theold course, where Sweetbread, MacMahon, Macheath, and Duapair had lost tha company of St. Blaise and Blue Grasip, boing in the meanwhile, however, joined by Bandigo, Tba rstraat of .Eastern Jfimperor had b6en Bounded long baforehand, and with Mespilua and Gorunna woll beaten below the distance, Bendigo and Macmahou paited from Macheath, Sweetbread and Dafipair, and rapidly overhauled Hannitago. Of the pair Bondigo was bhowing much tho bolder front, aud wheu Wall saw danger from him on his immediate right, he at once raibod hia whip. . The tactioß proved fatal, as, with Bird of Freedom " tacking " to the left, b,G got on to tl?e new ground, and,
being caught by Bendigo less than a hundred yards from home, ttie old 'an then had all th best of it, and won rather cleverly by fchre parts of a length. MacMahon was ridden ou to just beat Hermitage for plae » money at an interval of four lengths from Biid of Fr9 dom, with Gorunna a bad fifth, Despair sixth Sweetbread seventh, Blue Grass eighth, Mespi lus ninth, and Macheath tenth. Then came Magdalen, Eastern Emperor, Snmaritau, Woodlark, and Brocken, with Reine Blanche, Drakensberg, St. Blaise (pulling up), and Tita the last four. Time by Benson's chropograph 1 mm. 36 4 sth sec. Value of the stakes, £1724.
