Here Ritnnchatn and Langwell beat a retreat, and with the favourite immediately assuming the command, ho did not permit the race to remain long in the least doubt, and won in a canter by a langth and a half from Golden Ray, who baat the Lynetto colt as far fo> second money. Tho lot reached tho sUutinp-post within a few minufcep of the appointed 2 50, and owin^ to the mist, which now covered the heath, it was quite impossible to distinguish the colours. The patience ot the spectators was not taxed for Jong, howover, and at the third attempt the flag fell to a grand start, in which S^ndiway, Arcbiduc, and FJorancn got best off on the right from Bendigo and Pmm, thr-fe being followed by Sir Reubpn, Stockholm, Ordovix, aud Pizarro (on the lc-ft), with Euchanan and Tho Prince clear by themselves in tho rear. Iv this order they ran far a quarter of a mile, when Ordovix, in the centre of the course, dapped on full sail, and took a decided lead from Sandiv/ay, Arehiduo, Bendigo, and Corunna, of whom the latter, after beginning slowly, had soon workod hia way into tho leading divisiou. The second lot waa now composed of Sir Reuben, Stockholm, Prism, Florence, and Quicklime, and the others, of whom Mac; heath was never in the least degree formidable-, had already cornmencad to scatt9r all over th 1 courso. Upon the completion of the first half of tho journey Ordovix had shot her bolt, and, with Sandiway resuming possassion, she came ou Irotn Archiduc, Prism, Bondigo, Florence, and Pizarro, and these got rid of Stockholm, Sir Reuben, and Corunna a little further ors, whiio Chinlehurat had joined The Prince and Buchanan at the " tail end. ' Aa they approached the red post Archiduc drew up to Sindi way's neck, and with Florence taking advantage of an opening be'uween Prism and Brndigo, ot whom tho big horse was now compounding, ehe took third place exactly a quarter uf a mile from home, with Pizarro, who had been bearing away to tho lower ground, following Bendigo, with the others thoroughly disposed of. Whsn they had passed the red post about a hundred yards, Archiduc took up the running from Sandiway and went on to the distance, whnn his light was extinguished in a very few strides through the challenge of Florence aud Bendigo. This pair wero no sooner left in the van than Florence had a neck the best of ifc, with each jockey doing all he knew in the effort to reach the goal first. They ran homo locked together, and although Snowden's determined horsemanship prevented Bendigo from repeating his behaviour of last year by cutting out to the loft, b9 did | swerve plightly, and moreover changed his legs 30 or 40 times from homo, so that Florence, who battled on to the end with groat resolution, secured the victory by a head ; Pizarro was a bad third at an interval of about six lengths, with Arehiduo a couple of lengths away fourth, Sandiway fifth, Quicklime sixth, Prism seventh, Stockholm eighth, Sailor Prince ninth, Amalfi tenth, Macbeath eleventh, and Corunua twelfth, the whippors iv being Sir Reubeu, Chisleburst, and Coiunna. These were followed by Cora, on the immediate whip-hand of the Casuistry colfc, Gracchus, Lonely, and Golden Ray, with Xaintrailles and Breakfast on their heels. These positions were maintained until halfway across the flat, when the Casuistry colt assumed the command, with Cora in attendanco, and after the retirement of Farewell and Tho Admiral the purenit was carried on by Golden Ray, Lonely, Xaintraillps, and Gracchus to th« Bushes, whon the favourite drew into third place. All tha pull was taken out of him, howevor, before entering the Abir.gdon Mile Bottom, and the Casuistry colt, having disposed of tho challenge of Cora in tho most, summary fashion, ho came up the hill in grand style and w>n very easily by three lengths, four lengths dividing swoud and third. Prince Rudolph made* steady running from St. Gatieti to just balow the Bushes, when he beat a retreat, and the "Saint" was followed down_ the hill by Duke of Richmond, who kept in his track until entering the Abiogdon Mile Bottom. He then came out on the left and reached St. Gatien's girths half-way ud the hill, but by this time the fire waa pretty near extinguished, and, although ho struggled to tbe oiid, he was easily beaten by three- parts of a length ; a bad third.
