Baliol made the running, followed by Lady Anne and Retreat, with Princess Bladud whipping-in behind Reveller for a-quarter of a mile, when she ran into third place. After going over the hill the two leaders increased their advantage to a dozen lengths from Prin-, cess Bladud and Retreat. Half a mile from home Lady Anne dropped back, well beaten, and Baliol, coming right away by himself, won in a canter by 12 lengths ; a bad third. Retreat pulled up last. The Prince made the running, and was closely attended by Chislehurst, close up with the pair being Hauteur and Macheath, while Galiiard waited in the rear. In this order they ran without material change until they made the bend, when Galiiard hung out signals of distress, and with The Prince and Chislehurst also having had enough of it, the issue became reduced to a match between Hauteur and Macheath, of whom the former always had slightly the best of it, and won a desperate race by a neck ; threo lengths divided the second and third. When the lob reached the post a slight break away occurred, but they were soon in line again, and would !have gone' at the next attempt but for Romeo showing temper, the Yankee was fractious again before Tom Cannon could get him to join his horses. However, it was very little after the appointed time when Mr M'George dropped his flag, and the lot were despatched to an excellent start, the line being unbroken for several yards. Dutch Oven, who occupied a berth on the extreme left, was the first to draw out, and she went on attended by Fenelon, Sachem, and Actress, with Sweetbread, Marden, Battlefield, and Quicklime at the head of the next division, which comprised the favourite, Baliol, Laureate, and the Hygeia colt, whilst Romeo brought up the rear. Little alteration in the above order took place till about a furlong of the distance had been covered, and then actress drew out, attended by Baliol, Fenelon, Marden, and Sachem, with Dutch Oven, Geheimniss, Laureate, and Shotover succeeding them, whilst the Hygeia colt dropped back into the company of Romeo. So they went up the hill, but on approaching the Rifle Butts Actress was about two lengths in front of Baliol, the pair going on well clear of Fenelon, Geheimniss, Marden, and Quicklime, well up with these being Sweetbread, Shotover, Laureate, and Sachem, whilst Romeo was now the absolute last. No further change occurred until reaching the Old Red House, when Actress held a clear lead of Baliol, who in turn was four or five lengths in advance of Fenelon, Marden, and Geheimniss, the next lot comprising Sachem, Sweetbread, Shotover, and Laureate, Quicklime and Battlefield being at the head of the remainder, who were still whipped in by Romeo. Half a mile from home Baliol joined Actress, and the pair came on clear of Geheimniss, Laureate, and Sachem, but coming round the final bend Geheimniss took up the running, and was attended, as she entered the line for home, by Sweetbread and Shotover, with Fenelon and Sachem next. Dutch Oven now commenced to work her way towards the front rank. The favourite got rid of Sweetbread, Marden, Laureate, Shotover, and Fenelon just below the distance, but was immediately challenged by Dutch Oven, who came with one run from the distance, and, quickly getting the best of Lord Stamford's filly, easily bowled over the odds by a length and a half ; Shotover, beaten four lengths from her companion, was third, with Sachem fourth; Sweetbread fifth ; Quicklime sixth ; Marden seventh ; Battlefield eighth ; the Hygeia colt and Romeo next ; the last pair being Baliol and Actress. Garland made the running, followed by Fortissimo, Friday, and Peppermint, with Our John bringing up the rear until rounding the bend, when Fortissimo drew^ level with his stablecompanion, and the pair kept company until reaching the stand, where the favourite took up the lunning, Friday going round the turn out of the straight third, and Peppermint fourth. As they_ made for the St. Leger course, Garland rejoined Fortissimo, and the pair went on clear of the others until rising the hill, when the outsider dropped clean away, and Friday drew out with a slight lead of Fortissimo, who in turn went on clear of Peppermint, Retreat, and Our John, Garland, who was no longer persevered with, tailing off. As they passed the Rifift Butts, Friday was done with, and soon afterwards Peppermint became second, Retreat third, and Our John fourth. These four all took close order before reaching the half-mile post, and came on in a cluster to the bend, where Fortissimo and Peppermint were beaten, and Retreat came out with our John. For a while it looked as though the pair would have to fight a determined battle, but the big horse fatnycd the longei , and gradually drawing away

from inside the distance won cleverly by threequarters of a length ; Fortissimo was a very bad third, half-a-dozen lengths clear of Pepperment fourth, and whereas Friday was tailed off, Garland came home with the crowd. Here Rozelle took close order with Confusion, but neither could get out of the way of bhotover, who, after treading their heels off to the distance, came out and won in a canter by four lengths ; a bad third. Little Sister was last, about a couple of lengths behind Confusion. Value of the stakes, £925.
