The General Election.

Tho nomination for the Taieri district is fixed for the Ist December, at the County Buildings, Mosgiel, and the poll will be taken on the 9th. The polling-places are : — The County Buildings, Mosgiel ; Courthouse, Outram; and the schoolhouses, North Taieri, Maungatua, Brighton, and Otakia. Mr W. H. Williams, manager of the Shag Point Colliery Company, announces himself as a candidate for the Moeraki seat.

The number of Canterbury candidates has now reached 53, and others are still threatened. The districts of Avon, Akaroa, Selwyn, and Ashburton aro the only uncontested electorates.

Regulations and writs under the Maori Representation Act are gazetted. For the Northern district the nomination is to be at Russejl on the 24th November, arid the polling on December Bth. For the Western Maori district the nomination takes place at Cambridge on November 24th, and the poll on December Bth. For the Eastern Maori district the nomination is to be at Napier .on November 24th, and the polling on December Bth. For the Southern Maori district the nomination is to be at Kaiapoi on November 24th, and the polling takes place on December Bth.

Mr A. C. Thomson formally declares himself as a candidate for the Wakatipu at the forth' coming elections. The Working Men's Political Association sent a deputation to Sir George Grey assuring him of their support in his candidature for Auckland City East. The whole of the writs were issued on.the 10th and they arc returnable by the 19th December, Friday, the 9th of December, being fixed for the general polling-day. A supplement to the Gazette notifies the issue of the writs, appoints polling-places, and calls Parliament together for the 22nd December. It is not, however, called for the despatch, of business.

The committee appointed by the South Dunedin electors to interview probable candidates 1 for the Peninsula selected Mr W. H. Cutten, •. and that gentleman has intimated to them his willingness to contest the seat. Mr W. M. Bolt last week received a requisition signed by over 200 electors requc siing him to allow himself to be nominated for a Dunedin constituency in the interests of the working classes generally. Mr Bolt has replied that he regrets nis private affairs preclude his acceding to the requests We take the following election items from the Cromwell Argus :— We hear that Mr William Frascr is meeting with, most hearty support in his candidature for Dunstan. His supporters are confident of putting their man in.— The electoral roll for the Wakatipu district is probably the largest in the Otago Provincial District. It contains 1625 names, and this number will probably be largely increased by a supplementary roll of applicants between now and the issue of the writs. — Considerable surprise is expressed at the want of attention Wakatipu is receiving at the hands of reputed candidates. Mr M'Bride is the only one who has yet declared himself, and the electors Avant to know when Messrs Fergus and Thomson are going to announce themselves, if they mean ' business at all. If tho electorate is treated in this easy fashion much longer it is not unlikely a fourth party will step in and somewhat astonish them.

Mr G. C. Buttolph contradicts the sfcatemen made in the Western Star > that he has retired from contesting the Wallace seat. Mr Buttolph, as the working man's friend, expects to be at the head of the poll. 1 Friday, the 2nd of December, is fixed as the day for receiving nominations for the electoral district of Moeraki. The nomination of candidates will take place at Palmerston, and should a poll be required it will be taken on Friday, 9th December, the polling-places being the schoolhousos at Maheno, Otepopo, Hampdon, Shag Point, Dunback, and Green Valley respectively. The nomination of candidates for a member to the House of Representatives to represent Port Chalmers will ' take place on the 30th November, and a poll (if necessary) will be taken on the 9th December, at the Courthouse, Port Chalmers, and the schoolhouse, Ravensbourno. Mr Abraham announces hie retirement from his candidature for Dunedin City East in favour of Mr C. S. Reeves.

The numbers on the rolls for 1880 were : — Dunedin, 2334 ; Roelyn, 1161 ; Oaversham, 944. • : The total number of namos on the Timaru electoral roll is 1175 ; on the Geraldine, 1339 ; on the Gladstone, 10S3. The city and suburban rolls are now complete, and will be ready for circulation early next week. The numbers of electors in the various electorates are :—
