When the flag did drop Bend Or was first at work, but was immediately pulled back, and Robert the Devil went away at a Dice striding galop, which Boon showed him with a lead of some three clear lengths. They ran thus to the top of the hill, where the pace was improved, and Bend Or somewhat decreased the favourites advantage, bnt in going to the turn Robert the Devil once more widened the gap feo ita original extent. When fairly in the line for home Bend Or gradually lessened his opponents lead, and by the time the Bell was reached he had him nicely "tacked down." Cannon made a Btrong effort on the favourite, but he could not hold his own, and without tbe semblance of an effort Bend Or collared him opposite the reserved lawn, and won by a neck, amidst a scene of excitement such as has eeldomif everbeencqualled even onEpaomDovms. This season she won the G-res.t Northern Handicap of 584 soys., at York. Her owner last year won the Goodwood and Doncaster Cups with Dresden China. Nottingham does not appear to have bean much thought of until this season. As a three year- old he ran very badly iv some of the big race s, and last year be rau only twice, aud thuu iv hunters' flat race s, of whicu he won one. Fernandez ia well known as a brother of the great laoncmy, and his performances have been of a high order- As a three-year-old he wod the Newmarket Craven S akes, of 747 aovs ; was unplaced in Petronel's Two Thousand Guineas ; ran secend to Bend Or in the St. James' Palaco Stnkfiu, of 1250 rovh ; fuul second in the Cambridgef-hire fatakes (B^t I .) of 1927 Bova, won by LuceUa (7st lib). In Udo lust race he would have probably been returned the winner but for a jostle by Lucetta. Fordbam, who rode Fernandez, lodged a protest, but it was dismissed.
