Robert the Devil has now won £14,850 in stakes, made up as follows : — Rons Memorial at Goodwood, £2,067} First October Stakes at Newmarket, £212; Stockbridge Ciennial, £400; St. Ledger, £6,025; Great Foal Stakes, £2,697; Cfflßarewitch Stakes, £1,382; Champion Stakes, £2,067.
Robert the Devil's party won £80,000 in wagers by bis victory in the Caasarewitch. Mask has broken down and been leased by Mr Cookson for stud purposes.
Owing to the dangerous state of the Duchtss of Westminster's health all the Duke's horses in training, except Bend Or and Evasion, are to be Bold off without reserve.
Fred Archer will probably go into partnership with trainer Matthew Dawson.
Up to October 22nd F. Archer had won 97 races oat of 283 mounts ; G. Fordham, 96 out of 318J; T. Cannon, 75 out of 304 ; C. Wood, 62 out of 368 ; C. Morbey, 51 out of 259.
Books have been opened on the Derby of 1881 and the following are the favourites' prices: — 7 to 1 agst St. Louis 10 — 1 Sir Charles 100 — 8 Town Moor 100 — 4 Fortissimo.
The Sandown Park Autumn Cup, run for on October 21st, was won by Mr Towneley— Parker's Melfort in a field of nine.
The two-year-old cols Lord Chelmsford, who coßt 21.000 guineas as a yearling, ran unplaced in a £100 plate at Newmarket meeting. Robert the Devil's time for the Cfflsarewiteh Stakes was 4min. 18jsec, or 18£ Bee. longer than CLipperdale's last year.
St Louis, who won she Middle Park Plate and is now first favourite for the Derby, is halfbrother to Pellegrica and Pilgrimage, and cost 2,200 guineas as a yearling. He had never raced before this great victory.
Bal Gal austained her first defeat in the Middle Park Plato, she having gone off a good deal and the 71b penaly in addition putting her out of it.
Rossiter had the mount on Robert the Devil in the Champion Stakes and obeyed his instructions to " make every post a winning one " bo strictly that he beat Bend Or by ten lengths in the fast time of 2min. 13sec. for the mile and aquarter and 73 yards. The yearling sales of 1880 saw 451 youngsters, 229 colts, and 222 fillies sold for a total of 89,896 guineas, or an average of almost exactly 200 guineas each. Hermit's nine averaged 606 guineas j Brown Bread's ten, 599 guineas ; Sterling's ten, 545 guineas ; Blair Athol's six, 466 guineas ; Rosicrucian's twenty-two, 388 guineas ; Pellegrino's three, 387 guineas ; Plebeian's three, 370 guineas.
