Robert the Devil made the running at a moderate pace, followed by War Horn and Re treat on his left and Dora on the right, the whippere in of the party being Bend Or and Spitzberg. They ran in this order to the Bushes, when the pace was materially improved, and as a consequence War Horn and Dora lost their places, and Muriel took second position, coming down the hill at the quarters of Robert the Devil, Bend Or, on the left, also lying well up third. Out cf the dip the latter and Muriel changed places, and the Derby winner challenged Robfrt the Devil, whom he seemed to have collared 50 yards from home, but he swerved in the last few strides, and, after an intensely exciting race, was beaten by a head ; three lengths separated the second and thiid; Retreat waa fourth, War Horn fifth, and Spitz berg last. Next to Fire King laid Sutler and Microphone, with Assegai, Sword Dance, and Khabara clear of Hackthorpe in the centre, and Queenfisher, Young Duke, and Lincolnshire holding good places on their whip hand to the Bushee. At this point Sutler, Assegai, and Lincolnshire began to hold out signals of distress, and Fire King was followed by Microphone, Queenfisher, Mowerina, Sword Dance, and Young Duke into the Abingdon Mile Bottom, where Hackthorpe made a show- His effort was not sustained, however, and dying away haif up the hill in company with Mowerina, his comrade remained in clear command to the end, and won by two lengths from Sword Dance, who ia turn beat Microphone by a neck for second money. Lancaster Bowman, in the right-hand divi. sion, cut out the work, followed on his Q w n side by Etf King and Sword Dunce, in the centre by Peace and War Horn, and on the left by Favo. They travelled thus to the Bushes, where Peace vanished from the front, and Lancaster Bowman was followed down the hill by Elf King, Sword Dance, and Favo, of whom the first-named pair closed with the Bowman in the Adingdon MiJe Bottom. Sword Dance compounded, however, a conple of hundred yards off home, whereupon Elf King went ahead without the least trouble and won easily by half a length ; three lengthß dividing second and third. Sword Dance was close up, fourth, War Horn fifth, Stitchery sixth, and North Elkhorn last. Value of the stakes, 512 soys.
