Although there were only 19 runners, and these were all weighed out in excellent time, it. was late before the signal was given for them to leave the paddook, and even then a further delay occurred, owing to the difficulty experienced in clearing the course of the denselypacked crowd, which had swarmed on to it directly after Quicksilver had proved successful. It was after 3 o'clock when Fire King • led the way from the paddook, and was followed on to the course by Apollo, Death or Glory, Mariner, Ercildoune, Peileas, Draycott, Yon der Tann, Robert the Devil, Mask, Valentino, Proctor, Cylinder, Zealot, Teviotdale, Muncaster, the colt by Uncas from Hetty, Bend Or, and Boreas in the order named. After a short "petty" parade, matters were all made straight on the course, and Eroildoune led the cavalcade past the stand and in the parade preparatory to the preliminary canter. Here, again, Lord Rosebery's colt showed in the van, and the lot were whipped in by Mariner, who proved a most awkward customer to deal with, and in his endeavours to go the contrary way to that desired by- his pilot, cannoned heavily against the American horse Boreas, and nearly ' brought him down. After this but little time was out to waste, and the lot wending their ■ way through the paddock without further ' delay, arrived at the post just a quarter of an , hour after the appointed time, 3 o'clock. Mr M'Gsorge soon had them in good order, and at 1 the very first attempt the signal was given and the lot despatched to a first rate start. At this moment the positions were as follow, viz. :— On the right were Muncaster, Lord Eosflbery's pair, Robert the Devil, Van der Tann, Zealot, and Valentino ; in the centre, Apollo, Manner, and Teviotdale j and on the left, Mask, Fire King the Hetty colt, Boreas, Bend Or, Death or Glory, and Proctor. The lot had proceeded some few strides on their journey before Boreas, Bend Or, Valentino, Robert the Devil, Cylinder, and the Hetty colt bore their coloutß to tho front, and these constituted the vanguard for about a couple of hundred yards, when, having fairly settled down to their work, the agpeot of affairs assumed a change, and Boreas on the outside took up the running, followed by Bobert the Devil and Death or Glory, Valentino and the favourite being pulled back into the middle division, and following in pursuit of . Cylinder, the Hetty colt, Fire King and Draycott. As they came to the City and Suburban starting-post Death or Glory rushed to the front, and was followed by Fire King, the Hetty colt, Boreas, Robert the Devil, and Draycott. at the head of the remainder, sue ceeding Valentino, Mask, and Cylinder, just separated by daylight from Teviotdale and Apollo, Yon der Tann bringing up the rear behind Proctor and Ercildoune, both of whom he passed as they made the commencement of the furzes. Directly afterwards Robert the Devil went to tbe front, and assumed a length's lead of Boreas, Valentino, and Cylinder, Mask lying next, just in advance of Yon der Tann, Draycott, and Teviotdale, while the Duke of Westminster's pair, namely, Bend Or and Muncaster, separated these from Mariner, Zealot, and Fire King, Ercildoune following in the heels of this lot, and leaving Peileas, Death or Glory, and the Hetty colt now last. As they commenced the descent of the hill Robert the Devil was BtiU in command, but Yon de Tann ■ had run through his horses and taken second place, the pair being followed by Teviotdale and Mask, with Mariner and Bend Or next, in front of Draycott, Zealot, and Apollo. Round Tattenbam Corner Robeit the Devil kept his place admirably, and into the straight was attended by Yon der Tann, Teviotdale, Mariner, and Mask, with Bend Or and Apollo most prominent of (he remainder, of whom Ercildoune alone presented a bold appearance. Over the ■ tan road Mariner, when going wonderfully well, suddenly disappeared from the front, and with Teviotdale and Yon der Tann also beating a retreat from distress. Mask took second glace, closely followed by Bend Or and Apollo, ealot and Draycott coming on at the head of the others. Before reaching the bell Maßk bad Bhot his bolt, and it seemed as though Bobert the Devil had the race in hand, until Bend Or, creeping up inch by inch, made a vigorous challenge opposite the stand. Robert the Devil made a brilliant effort to hold his own to the end, but it was all to no purpose, for the favourite got on terms with him in the last few strides, and won a magnificent and tnout exciting race by a head. Mask was fully half a dozen lengths away, placed a bad third, well clear of Apollo, fourth. Zealot was fifth, Draycott eixth, Yon der Tann seventh, Mariner eighth, Muncaster ninth, Proctor tenth, and Cylinder next; the last four being the Hetty colt, Death or Glory, Pelleas, and Valentino. Coming into the straight Elizabeth took up the running, and was attended in the line for home by Sweetbriar colt and Emperor Titus, Alchemist heading the remainder, of whom Mandarin and Bute drew up to their heels after crossing the road. Below the bell Mandarin and Bute drew up second and third respectively, but neither could reach Elizabeth, who won easily by a length ; three lengths separated the second and third. Ib was nearly five-and-twenty minutes after the time appointed before a start was ef. fected, a Blight delay being occasioned by the bolting of Mirth and the subsequent refusal of Fire Queen to join her field. They v.ere despatched in excellent terms at last, the first to show in front being Bonnie Marden on the outside, who came on from Eastern Empress, Mirth, Jennie Howlat, and Grey Hen, with Evasion at the head of the others, and Novice, Versigny, and Mereny in their immediate track to the road, where Fire Queen on the inside was driven to the front, and was followed by Mereny and Eastern Empress, just clear of Novice, Bonnie Marden,Evasion,and Versigny, after them succeeding Jennie Howlet, Mirth, and Grey Hen, with The Song and Qaeenfisher the two whippers in. As they came to the mile-post Evasion assumed the command, and was followed by Bonnie Marden, the pair going on a couple of lengths from Jenny Howlet, Eastern Empress, Mirth, and Versigny, with Novice and Grey Hen next, and Fire Queen last. At the top of the hill Bonnie Marden drew up to Evasion's girths, and with Fire Queen unable any longer to go the pace, the leading pair from the top of the hill were attended by Grey Hen, who drew up to their heels as soon as the descent was commenced, Jenny Howleb lying next in advance of Versigny; Mirth, The Song, and War Horn, and Eastern Empresß now last, tailed off behind Fire Queen. As they came round Tottenham Corner Evasion held a slight lead of Bonnie Marden and Grey Hen, the two latter being followed tin the lower ground by Jenny Howlett and Versigny, with War Horn and Queenfisher lying well up on the upper ground, and The Song following in their heels. At the distance Evasion and Versigny were both well beaten, and Jenny Howlet came to the front, followed by Bonnie Marden and War Horn, with Queenfisher and Novice in hot pursuit. Jenny Howlet was driven right out to the end, and gradually increasing her advantage, eventually secured a twolengths' victory from Bonnie Marden, who just obtained the advantage of War Horn a few strides from borne and obtained second honours by a bead. Qaeenfisher was fourth, Evasion fifth, Novice sixth, The Song seventh, and Versigny and Mirth the next pair, and the last four were Grey Hen, Mereny, Easter Empress, and Fire Queen. At the top of the hill Master Kildare took second place, and in the straight Parole became third, but neither could get on terms with Fashion, who won easily by a length s half as far again separated the second and third.
