ENGLISH,
The Duke of Newcastle, who died in March laßt, in the forty-fifth year of his age, early commenced his connection with the turf, one of the first horses of any merit that ran in his colours being Indifference, a chestnut Birdcatcher colt, that in 1858 and 1859 Bhowed a little form at York, Monmouth, and elsewhere. It was not until he had succeeded bi» father in 1864 that hia colours, altered from black and cherry sleeves to the violet and white hoops, that sown became so familiar, began frequently to be seen on the backs of winners. Under the able management of Matthew Dawson his horses held their own fairly well, amongst those that c m best be called to mind being Speculum, winner of the City and Suburban and Goodwood Cup, and now a most distinguished Bire ; Julius, winner of the Cesarewitcb, as a three-year-old, with Bst. on his back ; Pace, Pericles, Silenus, Nike, Prince Imperial, Tenedob, Poinsettia, Stephanotis, Bismarck, Opoponax, Flyiag Scud, Sweet Anne, aud Ninny. Lord Bosebery baa lost by death the
valuable brood mare Lady Audley, dam of Touohet. The latest betting on the great three-year-old races is as follows :~ TWJ THOUSAND GUINEAS 4to 1 agrat Lancastrian q .. 2— — Cadogaa g _ i— D scord 100 — 12 Gunnenhury 1. 0 — 12 itayon d'ur 1000 — 10i) Ruperra. DERBY. 7 to 1 agst Falmouth 8— 1 Victor hief 25 — 1 Os-xtoniau 83 _ 1 __ tansdowne 33 _ i Strathearn 100 _ 2 f-'qulrrel 100 — 2 Sir Bevys 800 — 6 Indigo. At the next meeting of members of the Jookey Club, the stewards will hand in an important memorial from the principal trainers, on the subject of the laws relating to apprentices ia racing stables. Concerning tho American horses now m England, the Spirit of the Times > says :— '•Duke of Magenta continues to improve, and the remainder of Mr Lorillard's team, and all the members of the Preakneas string are reported to be in health. A correspondent to one of the city dailies regards Uncas &% propi rly assigned t'i that claas of horses known as the ' useful kind,' and thinks his captcity unequal to the D^rby course; alleges that ho is wanting in driving power, and thinks that h'S hope for fama will be in handicaps. This is a matter of opinion, and time aloae can develop wi&h what accuricy this judgment is founded. We question seriously his want of capacity to carry aay weight the schedule imposes, but there may be something in the objection made to hia ability to navigate the uneven Derby course. Papoose seems to be the centre of attraction among American representatives, and we trust she may prove to b a as good as reports make her."
