Invercargill, November 21st. At the District Court to-day the case of Daniels v. Hayes and another came on for hearing. It was a re-hearing of a case formerly tried at Riverton in the Warden's Court, to obtain one third of a share in Hayes Brothers' goldmining claim, Longwood. A great deal of evidence was taken, disclosing that a Fale note had passed between the parties, but no valid documentary agreement was made. The plaintiff stated that the defendants had promised to give him a share in the claim, whilst the defendants averred that they had only taken him as a partner on the payment of LSQO. The plaintiff accounted for his name not appearing on the application for the leade on the ground that when the lode was struck he was virtually in the employ of the Wallace Prospecting Association. It was feared that if his name appeared litigation might ensue. The long spell of fine weather broke to day, and thei'e was a violent S.W. f,ale and heavy rain. The barometer has ruled very low for the last day or two, falling below 29. There is likely to be a fight in the Council to-night over the municipal a 'counts, and Cr Kingland's notice of motion for a searching investigation of the financial position of the Municipality. The Board of Governors of the Southland Boys' aud Girls' High School have engaged Ramsay's Assembly Rooms, Invercargill, for temporary occupation for the Girls' High School, and have fiuallv decided to engage a head mistress at L4OO, and assistant teachers at L2OO and Ll5O per annum respectively. At the ordinary meeting of the Invercargill City Council, it was decided to call for tenders for about two mile 3of asphalte footpaths in one contract. The Committee of the Southland Benevolent Institution resolved to-day to request the Registrar-General to approve of the rule 3of the Institution providing for its incorporation under " The Friendly Societies Act, 1877." It was further decided to join with the Hospital Committee in arranging for a, bazaar and entertainment during Easter weeK on an extensive scale, the net proceeds to be equally divided between the two institutions. November 26th. The members of the House of Representatives for the Southland district are to be entertained at a banquet at Ramsay's Assembly Room, Invercargill, on Friday night, 29fch inst. The Hous. Messrs Macandrew, Stout, and Fisher have received invitations to be present. A large attendance is expected. November 27th. The Hon. Mr Fi3her arrived overland last night on departmental business. An alteration for the better is to be made in the Telegraph Office, which is to be removed from the upper floor of the Government Buildings to the ground floor. There ha,3 been a fearful N.W. gale to-day. The town is smothered in dust. The first meeting of tho Southland County Council was held yesterday, when uight out of the nine members were present. Mr Shanks was re-elected Chaiiman, and read a legal opinion to the effect that the proceedings of the Council would not be invalidated by any of the elections being cancelled. The outward correspondence contained an application to the Government for L 20.000, to cover the cost of damage to County woiktf ia Southland, but no definite reply had been received. An awfully sudden death occurred this morning at the Prince of Wales Hotel. The cook, a Chinaman, whilst at work in ths kitchen, dropped dead. A doctor was called, ard attributed the death to heart disease. The Hod. J. T. Fisher visited the pier to day with the Mayor. The latter mentioned the inexplicable delay that had occurred in opening the railway siding, which bal been finished more than eight weeks. Mr Fisher said ihe matter was not in his department, but he would bring it under the notice of the Minister of Public Works. He recognised the necessity of a Biding from the hilly ground, north of the jetty, to the crescent. The statutory meeting of the Southland County Council wa3 held this afternoon, and Mr J. S. Shanks was re-elected Chairman. The Bluff Bluff Haibour Board are about to obtain particulars of the cost of the new tug steamer recently arrived from England for the Lyttelton Harbour Board with the view of guiding it to a decision as to the propriety of purchasing a steamer in the Colonies or of ordering one from Britain. Bluff, November 24th. The Ann Gambles was completely broken up last night by the heavy southerly sea, Oamaru, November 27th. At the annual meeting of the Waitaki County Council, to-day, the Hon. Robert Campbell was re-elected chairman. The halfyearly balance-sheet showed the total receipts for six months to have boen L 4540 183 G l, aud the expenditure L49BS 9s 4d. The County at the end of the half-year had a balance to it-j credit of L 14.907. It has been blowing a g&.le all day, but so far I have not heard of any damage Laving been done. Mr Bastings, the present occupant of the chair, declined to be again nominated, owing to business engagements precluding him from devoting his time and energies to the duties appertaining to the office.
