KAITANGATA LAKES DRAINAGE.
meeting of the subscribers to the Kaitangata Lakes Drainage Works was held in Gray's Hotel, Kaitangata, on Friday last. Mr A. landells in the chair. The chairman
gave a detailed statement of the progress of the works, and the difficulties which thny had to contend with in making a practicable job of the proposed scheme. Their great difficulty had been want of funds. Those however which they had at command they had done the best they possibly could with. Sluice gates had been put in and a drain cut, and with the aid of the amount locally subscribed, and the £300 contributed by the Government, the contractors having finished their work, were paid off on September 19. The Treasurer's statement showed how the total receipts of £667 17s had been disposed of. The reports were adopted, and a vote of thanks was tendered to the Committee " for the trouble which they had taken in the matter, and the providence and economy they had exercised in connection with the expenditure of the funds placed at their disposal." It was further resolved to complete the widening and deepening of the main channel, and also to cut a channel to the river outside of the flood gate, at an estimated cost of £150 so £200. It was resolved to solicit subscriptions towards the work, and to soliict a Government contribution on the grounds that Government land would bo benefited by the works. The County Council is also to be asked for a contribution.
