ROSLYN ELECTION.

.Precisely at half past five yesterday afternoon, Mr John Gillies, the Returning Officer, declared the state oi, the Poll, to be.thus:---Mr Driver, 215'; Mr Allan, 39; majority for the former gentleman 120. Ho therefore declared that Mr Henry Driver hadjbeen duly elected to Topreseat the district of Roslyn in the House of Representatives. Mr Driver concluded amidst groat cheering. Althounh defeated, hi -was not disgraced nor subdued.—(Choers.) In his locality ho had obtained a majority, oyer his opponent which showed at least that they believed., him a proper representative. It «tmv gentlemen, ho said, that I am defeated, bufc at all events, tho principles I contended for will still prevail, and tho eyes of the people of Otago aro open to theso principles; I begtift thank you heartily for tbo kind manner ia which I havo been received. —(Checra.) A vote of thanks to tho Chairman waa c*r>ried by acclamation, which wound up the proceedings. Mr Driver was afterwards chaired by the assembled crowd, aud received quit** an ovation.
