ROSLYN ELECTION.

.Precisely at half past five yesterday afternoon, Mr John Gillies, the Returning Officer, declared the state oi, the Poll, to be.thus:---Mr Driver, 215'; Mr Allan, 39; majority for the former gentleman 120. Ho therefore declared that Mr Henry Driver hadjbeen duly elected to Topreseat the district of Roslyn in the House of Representatives. 'so *Mr Driver, "who waa received with great enthusiasm, was tben called upon to address the assemblage, consisting of abont 200 porsons. Ho stated that he could reply in the usual way of men in his position, but folt I that he could not sufficiently express his thanks for the way in which he bad been supported, tbe result of which showed itself in the great majority bs bad obtained over

his opponent, and as compared with previous electioi a ; and said that tho result would not be received with"pleasure by the Government afc Wellingtonwhen telegraphed to them; He hoped that if iho represented them successfully this seiaipn ho might have tiie same good fortonis oa a sutwcqUent elet^ tion. If ho had wronged his opponent it had been quite unintentionally. That MDtiemkn was well known as having fulfilled to very groat satisfaction a post, under Government, and he (Mr Driver} trusted tnat if at any timo ho conld boot service to Mr Allan ho should do his utmost toßCCuro him a good pcritton again. a» concluded by declaring that ho neyer^felfc prouder thwi at tho result of this election. Mr Driver concluded amidst groat cheering. Mr Auxv waa then called upon. «»>*** also received with enthusiasm, and stated. that he had to thank his numerous friend* forthe way in which they had supported, him at this contest nofr happily ended. Althounh defeated, hi -was not disgraced nor subdued.—(Choers.) In his locality ho had obtained a majority, oyer his opponent which showed at least that they believed., him a proper representative. A vote of thanks to tho Chairman waa c*r>ried by acclamation, which wound up the proceedings. Mr Driver was afterwards chaired by the assembled crowd, aud received quit** an ovation.
