"Used Up,' and the burlesque of " Cinderella," were produced last evening at the Princess Theatre, with Mr. George Eawcett and Miss Julia Mathews in the principal characters. There was an average attendance. To-night the same programme will be repeated, and to-morrow night Mr. Fawcett takes his benefit, a very attractive bill of fare being provided for the occasion.

A fire was discovered early, yesterday morning, on the premises known as the Bendigo Boarding House, in Stafford street, opposite Martin's Hotel. About a quarter after three o'clock, Mrs Kendall, Avife of the landlord, heard a crackling noise, which caused her to get up, and she then found, the place was on fire, Mr Asher, a member of the Volunteer

Fire Brigade, and a number of "other neighbors, were quickly on the spot after an alarm was given, and the fire was got out in a short time. It appeared to have commenced at the partition between the bar and the dining room, and the flames spread to the ceilings of both apartments, and also to a table, and to a large chest that stood next the partition. It is stated that all the occupants of the house were in bed at half past ten o'clock on Tuesday night ; and that "the fire in the grate, and all lights, were safely extinguished. The owner of the premises is Mr Best. We understand that the building and furniture are insured in the New Zealand office for £650.

The Private Act incorporating the Bank of Otngo has duly passed through the Assembly! The Act as nearly as possible resembles that of the Bink of New Zealand.

The Otago members, with the exception oi Mr' Gillies, Mr Wayne, and the Hon. Mr Pillans, returned by the Lord Ashley yesterday. On their way down a dinner was given to them at Napier by the Superintendent, Mr M^ean, and a similar compliment was paid to them at Christchurch by the Canterbury members. <

On the night before the steamer left Napier a man-was arrested, who according to his own confession, made whilst under, the influence of liquor, was a deserter from the" 65 th Regiment and a Maori spy. He alleged that he had made his way overland from ihe Waikato to. Napier.

In a notice of the Serpentine diggings in our issue of the 4th instant, it was mentioned that the nearest route is by the Black "Hill" Hotel. It should have been •-by the Black "Ball" Hotel.' We are glad; to learn that the Assembly has voted a urn of L4OOO in aid of the Exhibition. ■ The election of a" member of the Town Board, for High Ward, in. the place of Mr John Switzer, who, has resigned, took place, yesterday ; the office of the Board, in Princes' street, being used as the polling place. There were two candidates—Mr Charles Reid; who recently resigned the office, of clerk to the Board, and Mr Horace Bastings, of the Robin Hood Hotel. After a ; yery earnest but good tempered contest, Mr" Reid was declared to be elected ; the numbers at four o'clock, when the poll was closed, being—Reid, 136 ; Bastings, 115. Mr Reid had, therefore, a majority of 25 votes. There were, during the day, several complaints of having been unjustly left off the roll.

The following paragraph will interest the many Victorian admirers of Cricket, now resident inOtago, as most of the names mentioned must be familiar to them. We trust, also, that this early selection of fitting players to combat against the All England Eleven, and the evident pains taken to pick out men who have distinguished themselves in the various points of the game, will not be lost on those gentlemen whose' duty it will be, without fear or favor, to put " the right men in the right place" in the approaching match of Otago v. the Cricket Champions of the world.
