THE POLLING.

The voting for the Superintendence of the Province took place yesterday ; the polling commencing at nine o'clock,'and closing at four.

Throughout the day, the more active friends of the candidates ;were busily engaged in bringing up their men 5 aftd on eaqh side vehicles were employed. This was simply a needed convenience ; for the drenching rain that fell from noon till evening, made it a most muddy undertaking to so on foot to the booth, at the Court House— the road by the beach being execrably bad, and that by the Cutting and Smart-street still worse. Each side issued placards,setting forth reasons why their man should be voted for, and there, were some "squibs" on the walls which were decidedly not brilliant in composition. Mr Harris's committeepnblished,two or three times, the " State pf the Poll," as far as it could be estimated by good judges ; but the provisions of the Ordinance prohibiting the publication of any thing that could be deemed official, there was an absence of that bustle round the booth, which invariably attends an English election, as the result of the issue of at least hourly bulletins. We publish below a list of the polling districts, together with the number of names on the roll for each, and the votes recorded, so far as we have received information. The numbers for each candidate in the Dunedin district were announced about a quarter alter four o'clock, by John Gillies, Esq., sheriff, as returning officer; about a score of persons having nestled round the door, despite the torrents of rain, in order to learn the result.:—

So far, it will seen, Mr Harris has a majority of 81 votes ; of which 67 were in the Dunedin district.-; . nm ■ _ The Deputy-Eeturning Officer at Port Chalmers refused to make public the result of the voting in that district (mistakenly we should think,) supposing that his instructions prohibited him from so doing. Of course there were rumors that each candidate had the majority ; and other rumors did tho same as regards the Taieri disWe shall no doubt be able to publish the returns from the Taieri, Clutha, and Tokomairiro districts to-morrow ; and a pretty safe guess may then be made whether John Hyde Harris or John Larkins Cheese Richardson is the chosen man to preside over the Province for the next four years. We have no misgivings as to the result.
