This course is rendered the more necessary, in consequence of there being no regular nomination day ; and as I have never been a "candidate before, you cannot know anything of my opinions. Brevity bein^ the soul of wit, and as I prefer action to words, 1 shall be as concise as possible. Health and prosperity every man de3ires; and if wo would secure the first, we must have an abundant supply of good, pure wa^er, sufficient for every purpose. Next in importance to water is, a thorough system of drainage. The evidence of medical inea lately, must convince the most sceptical, that we are not only at the mercy of thedeadly pestilence, but we. are;actually iuvitia* its presence. As the procuring-of water and drainage will take some little time, it is a question' for consideration, whether a properly constituted Board of Health, cousisting of qualified persons, may not be advisible. If we desire to see D'niie'din becom? the commercial capital of New Zealand, we must not be unmindful of the times, but take every opportunity, of opening up the'principal thoroughfares of the city, I am desirous of seeing seeing- good paved streets, wherever the business and population of the city warrants it. I also think that every man within the city, wl;o pays rates, has a right to expect a decent approach to his house. For the above purposes I think the Town Board would be perfectly justified in borrowing money to a considerable extent, for, at least, a f -vr years to come.There is ample security in the municipal estate, which will be very rich when the present leases expire. Besides, I qui^e asrree with the principle that, as our descendants will be chiefly benefited we are quite justified in drawing upon them fora portion of the co3t, rather than levy extravagant rat« 3 m these early days of tKe colony.
