In putting Rotowaro out of the way very decisively at Huntly last Saturday, Ponsonby have made their alley good for the North Island final. PONSONBY'S four goal margin brings them face to face with Wellington Marist at Auckland, and the winners of this bout will meet Northern Otago at Wellington for the Chatham Cup. While not a side of giants, Auckland are certainly a well-balanced team, fast and nippy on the ball and will stretch the Wellingtonians when they come north. Though m the first spell at Huntly on Saturday the Rotowaro men gave their opponents a very hard game and might have been deserving of a goal lead, they fell to pieces m the second session when the Aucklanders got working together m a strong-going combination. There was a deal of dash m the forward line, and it was due to the deadly shooting of Bob Innes, the All Black who played centre forward, that the tally reached four. Watt, m goal for Ponsonby, had not a great deal to do, but he shows judgment when under pressure and his anticipation is vex*y good. In front of him are Pickett, who jast season played for some time m the North of Auckland, and Williams. The latter is a yoimg bustling player who seldom uses orthodox ways of tackling or defending and consequently upsets a lot of attacking formations. The outstanding player m the middle line is a youth by the -name of Wright. He has come to the fore this season from the lower grades and is one of the captures of the year. 4 One hardly expects to find finesse or field craft definitely developed m such a young player, and Wright is no exception, but he is a lad with a great heart and when it comes to tackling at close quarters he 'has stamina and physique which carry him a long way. Pie has more than a passing acquainance, too, with the art of placing and altogether is a tower of strength to the defence. The forwards are well balanced and combine well. They have m Tomilty and Mooney, two very tricky and elusive players whose foot .work and ball control are outstanding. Addshead at outside-right, is another player, 'probably on the diminutive side, but with a liberal supply of pace and determination and an accurate foot when it comes to a drive for goal. The side will put up a big fight for the title and with ground advantage, stand a good chance of taking part m the final. This week the Auckland reps, go on tour m quest of English trophy points and have the difficult task of meeting Otago and 'Canterbury m the South Island.
