McCARTEN AS TRAINER Not ail leading jockeys make successful trainers, but the former New Zealander, M. McCarten, who for many years was one of Australia's most successful riders, has firmly established himself as a first-class trainer. McCarten won the principal race at the Sydney Turf Club's meeting at Randwick on June 10 with the_ much-improved Shining Night. It was Shining Night's second successive win. McCarten has won 12 races in Sydney this season, seven of them at Handwfck. BREEDING OF HYCILLA Hycilla, who won the Oaks Stakes at Newmarket in the colours of Air. William Woodward, chairman of the New York Jockey Club, credits Hyperion with another classic winner. Hycilla descends from an old-estab-lished English family, although her dam, Priscilla Carter, was bred in America, being by Omar Khayyam, winner of the Kentucky Derby, from The Reef, by Trap Rock from Pyramid, by Hastings from St. Priscilla. by Rayon d'Or from St. Pauline, by St. Blaise from Patience, by Parmesan. In 1929 Mr. Woodward sent Priscilla Carter to England, and there she bred Spinner, who won the Scottish Derby, Alcazar, who won five races in succession as a three-year-old. including the Doncaster Cup, the Chesterfield Cup and the the Ebor Handicap, and Herald, winner at Newmarket. Patience was a ihreeSuarters sister to Cremorne, winner of the ►erby. It is the family that gave the turf The Tetrach, Thrush, Skirmisher and the good Australian performer Kennaquhair.
