Wednesday The New Zealand golf championships were continued to-day on the Balmacewen, course and the. players to survivo the third round of tho amateur championship are the title-holder, B. M. Silk, Wanganui; P. G. F. Smith, Akarana; G, A. Ussher, Timaru; and W. B. Reilly, Shandon. In the professional semi-finals N. H. Fuller, played brilliantly over the first nine holes in the afternoon and he increased his morning lead of three holes over Murray to five up at tho turn. He continued to play well and settled the issue on the 16th. After being one down at the end of the first round A. E. Guy defeated C. Sherriff by four up and three to play. Heavy showers in tho morning made conditions unpleasant for the players, but an improvement took place about 11 o'clock and the afternoon was ideal for golf. Murray in the morning, the unattached Chriiitchurch professional, N. H. Fuller, was responsible for a brilliant 'first nine holes in the afternoon, and he increased his advantage by two holes. Fuller three-putted to lose the first hole in the afternoon, and the next was halved. He drove the third green, 267yd5., and Murray, after playing a poor chip, missed his four and stymied his opponent, who was dead in two. Fuller was content to play round his opponent's lball and won the hole with a four. Murray reduced his deficit at the short fourth, when he holed a putt of five yards for a two. A well-judged : chip saved Fuller at the next, which was halved in birdie fours. For the nest four holes Fuller was unbeatable; as he obtained three birdie threes and a four.- A 12-footer at the sixth, a tenfooter at the eighth, and an eightfooter at the ninth enabled him * ; o win the three holes, and it appeared that he would have a comfortable victory. However, Murray made a great effort to stave off defeat coming home and, considering the golf played by his opponent, no did well to take the match so far. Fuller recovered well from a bunker at the tenth, and holed a three-yarder for the half in three. Ho was fortunate to halve the next, as he stymied ■ his opponent. A brilliant second to within 4ft. of the pin saw Murray win the 12th hole, and ho , gained another at the 13th, when Fuller failed to reach the green with hi 3 second. It was Murray's turn to recover from a bunker at the next, and ho played a fine shot to halve, Fuller being nicely on with his tee shot. Murray hit two good shots to tho 15th green, but Fuller again played a masterly chip to within a foot of the pin, and Murray had to bo content with a half. Murray was bunkered at the short 16th and, after missing hia ■ three, ho conceded the holo and the 1 match. One down after tho morning round, A. E. Guy squared the match with C!. Sherriff at the first hole in the afternoon, and tlie three following holes were halved in par figures. A stymie enabled Guy'to halve tho fifth, and he took the lead at tho eighth, where his: opponent was short all the way to the holo.
