LATE MR. WITHEFORD.
BIRKENHEAD TRIBUTE. A tribute to the work of the late Mr. J. H. Witheford was paid at a meeting of the Birkenhead Borough Council last evening. Tho Mayor, Mr. J. P. McPhail, said Mr. Witheford was one of the pioneers of Birkenhead. Although not a member of the council at the time, he was elected Mayor on January 17, 1901, following the resignation of tile first Mayor, the late Judge E. C. Button, who was elected in 1888. Mr. Witheford resigned the Mayoralty in 1905. He had been responsible for several important works. A motion of sympathy with the relatives was passed; and it was decided to secure an enlarged photograph of the late. Mi-. "Witheford to hang in. the council chambers.
