GREAT ENGINEER'S DEATH.
SIR C. PARSONS' CAREER. INVENTOR OF THE TURBINE. The death of Sir Charles Parsons, 0.M., chairman of C. A. Parsons and Company, Newcastle-on-Tyne, occurred recently at the ago of 76. His namo will ever bo remembered in connection with tho- invention and development of the compound steam turbine. Some of his other labours in the engineering ami scientific world am also noteworthy. For many years Sir Charles experimented on the artificial production of diamonds, and was enabled to prove that small ones could be produced ill. rapidly cooled iron, but in his most successful trials they were only equal in Weight to 1-20,000 th part of tho iron used. Sir Chillies' address to tho engineering s£etion"of the British Association invl9o4 attracted much attention owing to his proposal to sink a shaft in tho earth 12 miles deep, at a cost of i 5.000.000, tho work to bo completed in 8.5 years. Ha thought that tho project would prove of very high scientific -value. His ide.'i of a gramophone in which a vibrating column of air replaced the sound-produc-illg diaphragm was an interesting invention. which has not commercially developed. 081 TUAIIY* ' . MRS. MARGARET GRUBB. The death of Mrs. Margaret Grubb. aged 89, hns occurred at Avondale. Mrs. Grubb arrived at Auckland from England with her husband, Mr. David Grubb, by the Albert William in December, 1864, after ft voyage of 117 days. Mr. Grubb established a bakery business in Karangahape Road, ion the site now occupied by George Court and Sons, Limited. Tho business Was known us the .Crown Bakery, and became the largest, of its kind in Auckland. Mrs. Grubb was predeceased by her husband 29 years ago. There is a family of four sons, Messrs. I), Grubb. of To Kuiti, \V. Grubb, C. Grubb, and A. Grubb, of Auckland, and three daughters. Mrs. I!. S. Kirkpatrick, of Matainala, Mrs. Andrews, of Sydney, and Mrs. «7. McConn, of Titirangi. There are 23 grandchildren and 29 great-grand-children,.
