TO THOSE WHO FELL.

MEMORIAL AT BIRKENHEAD.

SACRIFICE IN GREAT WAR.

THE UNVEILING TOMORROW.

A handsome memorial, erected to the memory of tho men of Birkenhead who fell in the Great War, will be unveiled at Birkenhead at 3 o'clock to-morrow aftornoon. The dedicated site comprises a portion of the Civic Reserve, at Highbury corner, adjacent to the municipal offices. Tha area is enclosed by a rockery, and laid out in lawn, shrubs, and paths. There are two tiers of octagonal concrete steps at the base of the memorial. Above is a massive block of rough-hewn grey granite, on the north side of which a drinking tap and bowl are located. Above again, are four polished red granite columns, representing Duty, Service, Fidelity, and Justice.

On each of the four sides of the memorial is a polished black panel, bearing an inscription. Surmounting all is a beautiful floral standard in bronze, embodying the olive leaf and branch, and the Victor's wreath, supporting an opal globe, which encloses an electric light. The latter will illuminate the surroundings each evening from sunset until midnight. The cost of the memorial was approximately £3OO. The general design was the work of Mr. F. Finch. Mrs. Neal, representing the parents of the fallen soldiers, will unveil tho memorial, and the Mayoress, Miss Skeates, will place a wreath of remembrance at its base. The Mayor, Mr. E. S. Skeates, Mr. A. Harris, M.P., Mr. J. H. McNish (representing the returned soldiers), will bo the speakers, and the Revs. H. H. Bedford and J. H. Allen will conduct the service. This will be preceded by a parade of returned soldiers, Senior Cadets, Boy Scouts, Girl Guides, and Brownies, who, accompanied by the Borough Band, will march in procession to the Civic Reserve.
